So, there have been several times lately where I've either come back to my computer or shut down my computer and I get a blue screen that says something about dumping memory files. It doesn't happen all the time, but I know this can't be good. My system is also curiously slow. I was hoping I could find some help on these forums. Here is my HijackThis Log:

It doesn't sound like this issue is malware/spyware but we'll have a look.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hey, thanks for helping me out.

I performed the steps given, and it seemed to mess things up more. I did the stuff through My Computers > tools > folder options >view, downloaded and ran ATF, already had MalwareBytes so I ran that again (turned up nothing), and then I restarted my computer. Here is the problem - when I restarted and it went to the desktop, an error message popped up telling me that my system has recovered from a serious error which brought me to a page saying that "a device driver installed on my computer caused Windows to stop unexpectedly". I'm not sure if this means anything, but it had two help options: the first saying "install the most current device driver for your video card" and the second saying "manually decrease Hardware Acceleration for your video adapter". This was extremely new and odd to me so I reversed the changes made in My Computer & they're back to the way they were. I also installed a Windows XP Service Pack 3 update. I then restarted.

When I restarted that time (this is where I am now), I saw something I had a problem with before - black DOS looking boxes appearing on my screen with C:\\Windows\system32\cmd.exe. I'm sure those aren't the right slashes or whatever, but I think you get me. I can find the link to an old thread in a HijackThis forum where someone helped me fix that problem alone if you need to see it.

So now I feel there are more problems and am not sure what to do. I am going to post my log and then restart my computer, hoping that the boxes aren't still there. I don't get it because essentially all I did, since I switched back the stuff under My Computers, is run the ATF thing and MalwareBytes and install an update to my computer. Here is my current log:

We can remove items that don't need to run at start up, but you're having hardware / software issues and that's another forum.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Logitech\Desktop Messenger
Bonjour

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

I've done what you said. Question: Why did I remove my Logitech software? Also, Bonjour is used with iTunes and I have to reinstall iTunes now because I deleted that. Just wondering, why was I deleting those? To be honest, I am sure I am going to reinstall both because apparently I need them both. The recycle bin didn't need emptying, I don't know what that's all about.

I also deleted the Hijackthis things that you mentioned. Here is a new HijackThis log:

QUOTE
Bonjour, also known as zero-configuration networking, enables automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks. Bonjour uses industry standard IP protocols to allow devices to automatically discover each other without the need to enter IP addresses or configure DNS servers.
As far as I know Itunes doesn't need it.

Yes. I appreciate your help thus far and apologize for my late response, it's been such a busy week.

That's odd about Bonjour...I only asked because when I went to open up iTunes, it gave me an error message. I don't remember exactly what it said, but it had something to do with Bonjour. I just opened it now and did not get the error message so who knows about that. Sorry if my last post sounded rude in any way, I just re-read it and it seemed a bit mean.

Thank you for the link to the Logitech software. I've actually got the software right here, I was just wondering why you told me to delete it. Can you tell which programs I use least? I guess I'm just a curious person, especially when it comes to my computer (it's my baby). =)

Anyway, I haven't gotten the blue screen in a while so if it comes back, I will come back to the forums for more help. However, my computer is still running exactly how it was when I first came here - way slower than it usually runs. That sort of bothers me considering my PC is fairly new and these problems are making me wonder if there is something wrong that I am just not seeing or getting at. Also, when you said you think I'm having more software/hardware issues, why did or do you think it is that & do you suggest I look for help in those exact forums as well?

I know I had more questions but I can only think of a couple things. I use AVG to check for spyware and when I used to run it, it'd just about ALWAYS find some sort of spyware. Now, when I've been running it recently, it finds absolutely nothing each and every time - should I be concerned about this or do you think another program on my computer is already taking care of the spyware & that's why it finds none? Also, I use Mozilla Firefox 3 and I've heard people say it's slowed down their systems and other problematic things like that - do you think this could be the reason my system is so slow or part of the reason?

Again, I apologize for the late response and really do appreciate you taking the time out of your day to assist me with my problems. I've just run a new HJT log for the heck of it, I look forward to hearing from you again. smile.gif

The Logitech Desktop Messenger is a resource hog and not needed unless you use it.

C:\Program Files\NetRatingsNetmeter\NetMeter\NielsenOnline.exe
Description: Appears to have possible Malware functions

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NielsenOnline] C:\Program Files\NetRatingsNetSight\NetSight\NielsenOnline.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
