Hi, i get the error lsass.exe - unable to locate component

This application has failed to start becuase DNSAPI.dll was not found, re-installing the application may fix this problem,

I got this after doing a system recovery it was halfway through and my power went out, i started to reboot and it gets past my compaq scren( this is happening on my desktop ) and right before logging into my user account on the computer screen it pops an error up and there is nothing but a black screen behind it if i click ok it sits on a black screen and nothing happens.

i run windwos xp on my comp can anyone tell me waht to do!

i read another similar topic but i did not understand the steps to take thouroughly so if anyone could help that would be awesome

Hi. and welcome to the WTT forums
welcome.gif
This error can be time consuming to fix..........

1 Have a look here:
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-...l-not-boot.html
particularly at post 9 through 13
this may provide a solution for you

2 lsass.exe has been associated with dangerous virus activity, however the symptoms you describe are atypical of viral activity.....never-the-less, proceed with great caution on the next step

3 Remove your hard drive and slave it to another computer (one that is running good up to date anti virus protection) be careful that you do not click on any executable file on your slaved drive and carry out a comprehensive scan of the slaved drive using the other machine's anti malware products.

4 If the scan shows your drive to be clear of infection then proceed with the step 5, if infections are present, be sure to keep a copy of your anti virus report detailing the infections found and the action taken and send us the details here in this thread. NOTE please do not send us a log file from HJT here in this forum.....if an HJT log is necessary we will send you detailed instructions on how to do it, what it is, and where you should post it!.

5 Whilst your machine is slaved to the other computer take the opportunity to bring your back up/archive/copy of all your important stuff 100% up to date, accurate and reproducible and held securely on removable media (not your slaved drive)......the idea here is to ensure that all your important data, files, spreadsheets, work, music, emails, log in details, user names, address book, drivers letters, invoices, videos etc....in fact everything that is important to you (stuff that you would not like to permanently lose) is safe on external media, before you attempt to use the Recovery disc again, its best to keep your passwords committed to your memory rather than writing them down anywhere.....although this is difficult to do!
(As you started to use the recovery disc lets hope that you checked your back up for completeness accuracy and reproducibility before you started.)

6 Once you are happy with your back up/archive/copy then its time to format your slaved drive, but please be very very careful that the drive you are formatting is the slaved drive from your old machine

7 Once the format is complete then the slaved drive can be removed, and fitted back where it came from originally.

8 You should now be able to use your Restore disc to bring to bring your machine back to the state it was in on leaving the factory. but do make sure that you have all your Installation discs for applications (or the executable installation files), the serial or product licence key/numbers, including those for Windows itself.

IMPORTANT NOTES
You must take all personal safety and ESD (anti-static precautions) when opening and working inside computers. If you are not absolutely sure of these procedures or are not competent to perform them safely, then please entrust this work to your local competent computer technician.......it is good to learn and to save money but not at the expense of you or your families personal safety, or at the risk of damaging data, machines or lives

If you intend to consult competent computer technicians then be sure to get estimates of the cost before proceeding .

Good luck with all of this and let us know how you get on..
Regards

Hi, Have a look here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

This will give you detailed instructions on how to enter and use the Recovery Console.....

you will need the correct Microsoft Windows XP installation disc to boot from........................... a manufacturer's "Recovery disc "generally may not cater for this.
Please be sure that your back up/archive/copy of all your "important stuff" is 100% up to date accurate, reproducible and kept safe on removable media (external hard drive, DVD/CDs etc )before you start .
Good luck

Hi,
1 Are you sure you are using a genuine Microsoft Windows XP installation disc (not a Compaq Recovery disc)
2 Make sure you have set your BIOS boot priority to optical drive (CD) as number 1, when you have done with the Recovery Console set the boot priority back to hard drive 0, as number 1
3 Have a look here as this shows screen dumps of what you should see....:-
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_...s/wxprcons.html
4 It is Recovery Console you want...you will not find anything called Command Console so do not look for that.
5 Just follow the directions in order, given in the link for XP, (it might be wise to print them out so you don't miss anything!)
7 You didn't say if you have managed to ensure your back up/archive/copy of all your important stuff is all safe on removable media, 100% accurate, up to date and reproducible...this is a very important step before you get too involved with repairing or even reinstalling your system.
Good luck

Hi,
CODE
so i put in my disc click esc on the screen go to boot from CD and then i will get that?

1 NO,
2 insert the Microsoft Windows XP installation disc (not the manufacturers Dell recovery disc) and restart your machine
3 DO NOT press Esc
4 On the "Windows XP Setup" menu, select "R" for Recovery Console
5 Follow the onscreen directions
6 see how you go
7 Note Make sure your BIOS is set to boot priority for CD drive as priority 1 before you start.
Good luck
