Hi,

I have searched Google to remove kavo, tavo malware and I came across this site. I believed I got kavo.exe., tavo.exe, tt.exe., and 2.exe error messages from home computer through a thumb drive. I have had those for 3-4 months ago. My bf tried the usual way to rid of spyware...I don't know what he did (it worked for previous spywares) but those error messages still pop up. Two weeks ago, I backed up my stuffs and reformatted my laptop. There wasn't any problem until my brother was using my laptop again with the same thumb drive just a few days ago. I searched my laptop and thumb drive with Norton with latest virus update; it detected some infected files (i quarantined those and delete those) but seems like it can't get rid of the malwares. Does that mean the stuffs that I backed up on to the external hhd would also have the virus/trojan? Please help because this is driving me nuts...It seems reformatting is the only option...but what about my files in the external hhd?

I have followed someone's forum from this site and dled hijackthis program.

here's my log:

Take a trip to this webpage for download links and instructions for running Combofix by sUBs: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
  • Please Note: This tool may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start.
  • When CF has finished, it will produce a log C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply.
  • Post a fresh HJT log as well.
  • Let me know how the PC is behaving.

Oh, and keep the flashdrive away from the PC for the moment.

My laptop is doing fine. The pop ups are very inconsistent. Earlier in the day when I turned on the computer, tt.exe. and kavo.exe. error msgs popped up. I turned the computer off and turned it on again and this time 2.exe. error msg popped up. Those error msgs pop up right after windows start up.

Yes, I am keeping the usb drive away from the laptop. I also reformatted the home computer a few days ago with attempt to rid the kavo, tavo, tt, 2.exe. How can I get rid of the virus from the usb drive? How can I be sure that the stuffs that I backed up into external hhd are not infected?

Thank you again for your help!

We'll worry about this later.

You can scan it with an anti-virus program, but there is no 100% guarantee with computers i'm afraid. We'll worry about this later too.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Ensure a checkmark is placed next to both Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version - you'll need to clear it with your firewall.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan and then Scan.
  • When the scan has finished, click OK and then Show Results to view the results - no surprise there!
  • If MBAM finds anything, check the box(es) and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

Let me have the MBAM log, a fresh HJT log (run in Normal Mode) AND a description of how your PC is behaving.

Thanks, Noviciate. I'm wondering what do you mean run the HJT log in normal mode? Did I not do it right previously?

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is currently scanning my C drive. I wasn't sure if scanning D (memory stick) and E (Dvd player) drives were needed.

IE is running a bit slow, but that could be my imagination. It could very well just be a facebook problem; a particular fb page was processing very slowly. My laptop has hardly anything on it cuz I just recently reformatted it. However, no pop ups when I turned on the laptop. Surprisingly Norton didn't pop up a virus alert today. This is all I can think of to describe how PC is behaving. Let me know if you are looking for something else.

MBAM just finished scanning. It took 22 mins, but it didn't find anything bad. Did combofix already remove the viruses?

Here's the MBAM log:

Thanks, Noviciate. I'm wondering what do you mean run the HJT log in normal mode? Did I not do it right previously?

Normal Mode as opposed to Safe Mode. A HJT log in Safe Mode isn't as informative as one in Normal Mode due to the limited boot-up.
I don't write these instructions each time I post them, they are just a series of text files on my PC that I use as appropriate, so don't take it to mean you did something wrong, it's just what everybody gets.

I'm assuming then that the PC is generally behaving itself as far as the pop-ups are concerned, so we'll give the PC a little attention and see if that helps things along:

The following steps will serve as a spring clean for your PC. Not all of them will be of benefit to your PC as this is a general post, but the overall effect should be positive.

1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove any programs that you no longer use and then reboot your PC.

2) Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from here and save it to your Desktop.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:
    Windows Temp
    Current User Temp
    All Users Temp
    Temporary Internet Files
    Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program as a quick way to tidy those up as well.

When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.

For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please Note: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only.

3) Double click My Computer.
Right click the disc drive you wish to check.
Click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools Tab.
Under Error-checking, click the Check Now button.
In the "Check Disc Local Disk (C:)" dialog box, check both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, and then click Start.

This will look for and attempt to repair any errors that your hard drive has.

4) Defragment your hard drive. A tutorial for disc defragmentation is available
