While using my computer it has a tendancy to lock up and it will not allow me to do anything while it continues to run, I have no control of any part of the computer mouse and keyboard are useless. I have high speed internet access but the computer runs slow and takes forever to wake up after I turn it on. This problem has been going on for the last couple of months and system restore won't work, it says no changes have been made to the computer. When the problem starts I have to unplug the computer. I would be very appreciative of any help that anyone could give me. I have just heard about your website from a friend.
Thank you for any help

Hi Crewchief, and Welcome to WhatTheTech

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

First

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).

Next

Please provide a list of uninstallable programs.

To Provide a List of Installed Programs
  1. Run HijackThis.
  2. Click Config>>Miscellaneous Tools>>Open Uninstall Manager>>Save List
  3. Save list to Desktop
  4. Copy the Notepad list and Paste it into this thread.

In your next reply please provide:
  • Mbam report
  • List of Uninstallable Programs

Crewchief,

Sorry I confused you. What I'm looking for is Uninstallable programs. These are the programs that can be removed using the add/remove function in your control panel. Sometimes malware will show up there and if it does, by far the easiest method to get rid of it is to simply remove it. The log that I asked you for simply lists what is on your computer that can be removed by that method. The overwhelming majority will be programs that you purposefully installed. Some may be rogue programs that camouflage themselves as legitimate programs.

Understand?

Crewchief,

I'm not seeing anything in your log to cause your problem and I suspect that there isn't anything to be gained from the uninstallable list. Lets dig a little deeper and if we don't find anything, I'll link you over to the tech's at the hardware forum.

A. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop.

Note: If you already have ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version.

B. Now we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools:

NORTON ANTIVIRUS
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Disable Auto-Protect."
  • select a duration of 5 hours (this assures no interference with the cleanup of your pc)
  • click "Ok."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled and the sign will now look like this:
You succesfully disabled the Norton Antivirus Guard.

SPY SWEEPER
  • Open Spy Sweeper and click on Options > Program Options and uncheck "load at windows startup".
  • On the left click "shields" and then uncheck everything there.
  • Uncheck "home page shield".
  • Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".
  • Exit the program.
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable it using the same steps but this time reverse them.)

WINDOWS DEFENDER
  • Click Start > Programs > Windows Defender or launch from the system tray icon.
  • Click on Tools & Settings > Options.
  • Under Real-time protection options, uncheck the "Real-time protection" check box.
  • Click Save.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Security > Windows Defender, at the bottom of the Window Defenders page uncheck under Administrator Options "use Windows Defender" and then Save.
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable Defender using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Turn on real-time protection" check box.)

C.Go to -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

  • DO NOT USE your computer for any other purpose while ComboFix is running.
  • ComboFix may restart your computer, this is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log, ComboFix.txt.
  • Please post ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Tomk,
Thanks for your help and your interest in my case, it is a maddening problem and it happened again while I was trying to run Combo Fix, I had to turn it off and restart to follow your instructions. I am enclosing the Combo Fix report and a new Hijackthis log.
Thanks Again
Crewchief
