I'm able to apparently connect to the internet as normal, but the browser (I use Firefox) is unable to access any web site, and my email application is unable to connect to my ISP's mail server. So in effect I can't do anything at all. I'm posting this from my computer in work.

Below is the HijackThis log from my home computer :

Hello bridav

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum Sorry for the delay in responding but with the amount of people posting with infected computers there are not enough hours in the day

I need you to do a few things before we proceed, you have some serious infections on this system.

First drag Hijackthis to the trash as its outdated and download and install the latest version by Trendmicro

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe

Do this first...Important

Disable the TeaTimer, you can re enable it when were done if you wish

  • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
  • If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
  • On the left hand side, Click on Tools
  • Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
  • Restart your computer.

Only proceed after you have installed the latest version of Hijackthis.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- Don't forget to do this
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.

You can download both these programs to a disk or thumb drive and transfer them over to the infected computer.

Thanks, Ken - I'll do what you said and get back to you.
Please bear with me as it's a public holiday here in Ireland next Mon and Tue, so I won't be able to get into work to post the new HJT log etc until next Wednesday.
The only problem I can see is that I had to save the Anti-Malware exe file on a memory device and transfer it to my home computer - when I install, it won't be able to download any updates since my home computer is not able to access any web sites!

Hello Brian,

What your doing is fine, after you get up and running you can run Malwarebytes again after checking for updates.

There is a big fiasco between windows updates and the Zone Alarm Firewall, the last windows update is preventing people with Zone Alarm installed from accessing the internet, go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Zone Alarm. You have CA Secuity suite so Zone Alarm is overkill anyway.

You do have some malware issues besides no internet, but I would try uninstalling Zone Alarm first and see if that helps with your internet issue

Take your time, I will keep this thread open for you.

Ken

Thanks for taking the time to help me out, Ken - I'm extremely grateful for what you guys do here, and you were able to fix the problems I had a few years ago.
I wasn't aware of the problem with ZoneAlarm - I'll uninstall it as soon I get home.

Ken,

I've followed your instructions so please see latest HJT log and MBAM log below.
I also uninstalled ZoneAlarm as you recommended.
Unfortunately, I still can't seem to access any web sites, even though my computer appears to connect to the internet and gives a message saying it's connected.

Hi,

Take your time, I will be away until Saturday.

You can download this program to a disk or flash drive and transfer it to the infected computer, make sure you run it from the desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Go to the top of the page

Good Morning,

Things are looking better thumbup.gif It looks like you had Norton installed at one time, have you tried to remove it? It also looks like Zone Alarm wants to start up, have you uninstalled that program??

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Now lets check some settings on your system. For (2000/XP) Only)

  • Go to Start > control panel.
  • If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections.
  • Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl.
  • Left click on properties.
  • Click the Networking tab.
  • Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be available on some systems

  • Next Go start> Run type cmd and hit OK
  • Type in ipconfig /flushdns then hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)
  • Type exit hit enter

How are things running now?? If still no internet I will link you to our other forum that deals with issues like this
