Hi there,

I found your site through PC World article. I did everything they said to do to no avail. So here I am and so happy this site is here, because I really don't want to reformat my hard drive. That said I've got Tibs.GK and can't delete the lphc779j0e3ep file in my system 32 folder and I think the little bugger has installed something else in my directory to prevent me from doing so and I'm just smart enough to know not to fiddle around in there.

tried and failed:
Counterspy
Spybot - Search and Destroy
Microsoft Malicious Software Removal tool
Windows Live One Care

Here's my HijackThis log and let me just say in advance... I'm sorry. I haven't removed unused applications in ages.:

You might want to print this out.

You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on.

Once fix is completed in the all clear post!! Enable Teatimer

Next:

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.

Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Oh yeah and you wanted to know how the PC was running after I performed the prescribed tasks. It's hard for me to say. I don't use it enough on a daily basis to have a high sensitivity. It appears to be fine, but that irritating blue and yellow "Warning! Spyware detected..." background/wallpaper is still there and I don't know how to make it go away. In all reality I don't do a ton of work on this box because I use my laptop for most everything, but I do some spreadsheet work and surf on it. I also watch some streaming video while I'm working on the laptop. I either use the Netflix site or sometimes I'll got to SurfTheChannel.com. Should I stay away from STC? I'm suspicious that in my haste I accidentally clicked on one of those bloody banners somewhere and infected myself. Honestly though I have no real proof where it came from. Thank you for all your help so far!

Lets dig deeper

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good biggrin.gif

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

    Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        [list=a]
      5. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      6. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      7. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      8. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      9. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      10. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
