Hi .. i have been using Win Xp service pack 1 for 3 years now. I didnt have internet connection at home until recently and now i want to upgrade to SP2 etc. However the upgrade is not completing as i had used some theme sometime back which may have changed some settings. wheni tried to reinstall sp1 it also failed. Is there anything i can do without reinstalling windows ? (i may have lost driver cds so i dont want to)

thanks a lot

Did you try to uninstall SP2? Or do a System Restore back to a point in time before SP2.

You might want to pull the hard drive and temporarily install it as a secondary drive (NOT the boot drive) in another computer, then copy off any files you don't want to lose.

As for drivers, you should be able to go out to the computer maker's website and download all the latest drivers. This is something that should be done for all your hardware before upgrading to SP2. Copy them all to a CD to have on hand. You can do the same with your firewall and anti-malware programs.

I always recommend installing SP2 (and now SP3) from an install program on your computer and not through Windows Update.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) - Download and CD

Windows XP SP2 Network Installation Package - download and save to CD
or
Windows XP SP2 on CD, plus shipping and handling (about $3.50 in the US)

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) - Downloads and CDs

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network - ISO-9660 CD Image File

Windows XP Service Pack 3 on CD - Asia

Windows XP Service Pack 3 on CD - Europe and Africa

Windows XP Service Pack 3 on CD - North America - cost about $10 with shipping.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 on CD - South America

Actually my problem is that i had installed a vista theme sometime back. It changed some important system files. Now whenever i run the SP2 installer it gives an internal error and exits. It says files required for windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. to maintains stability windows must restore original files. Insert your service pack 1 cd now. then i downloaded xp service pack 1 installer and tried to run it but it didn't run and gave an internal error and exited.
So i cant have sp2 as sp1 is corrupt and sp1 i am not able to fix.

please help.
thanks

Yeah, like all of them!

You might try a system repair - Michael Stevens XP Repair Install
