Hi WTT. I ran Microsoft's Automatic Update yesterday and installed the XP SP3 (i have XP home edition). During the installation, Spybot TeaTimer activated, saying that new registry values were added. I figured that was normal and a part of the update, so I clicked Add Value or Accept Change or something--I don't remember; I never use the Resident feature of Spybot.

However, upon restarting the computer, again TeaTimer activated but this time displaying those same three or four values and asking if I wanted to delete them. I did, since I didn't know what the heck they were and if they were of any importance.

Cue today. I turned on the computer and I got the error message that is in my topic title. Does anyone know how to fix this error violation? Also, what caused the error? Automatic Update? Spybot?

Btw, the error pops up as a Spybot error as soon as Spybot enters the quicklaunch bar upon startup.

Can you boot the computer? If so, uninstall SP3 (yes, I know it's a pain but I do believe you need to do this). Once it's uninstalled and before you install it again, shutdown everything you can, especially programs like TeaTimer and anitvirus. You want as little running as possible when you install SP3 (SP2 previously for that matter).

Also, download the redistributable EXE or ISO instead of using Windows Update to install SP3.

Here are the links to Microsoft's SP3 for Windows XP.

Here is a list of fixes that are included in Windows XP Service Pack 3: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946480/&am....com/kb/946480/

If you can't uninstall SP3 for some reason, you should be able to bot to Safe Mode and do a System Restore to befoer SP3 was applied as one of the actions SP3 takes during install is create a System Restore point.

Boot, in what sense? Start it up? Well, yeah, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to post here. biggrin.gif

I should mention: the error disappeared when I turned my computer on this afternoon. Since the comp wasn't giving me problems in the first place (apart from that annoying popup message), I don't know whether I should wait till tomorrow to take any action.

I probably should still reinstall SP3 since those deleted values probably were important..

My only question is about the SP3 links you posted. The exe one cautions in big bold letters "DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER." The iso one just seems ridiculous; 544.9 MB. O_O Should I really take the risk of updating something that might not be meant for my computer..?

Is there a link to get back the original 66MB (I believe that was the number) version I downloaded yesterday?

Thanks for your assistance!

The EXE is exactly the same as what you receive via Windows Update. It will not cause harm., other than what harm SP3 itself causes pullhair.gif

The only difference is if something goes wrong, you don't have to download it again. It will be there until you delete it. I have SP1, SP2 and now SP3 EXE files since I almost never delete anything.

It's intended for people with more than one computer or IT/Network administrators that have to update several/many computers. They download it once then apply it to as many systems as necessary.

The ISO version is what you would get if you ordered a SP3 CD from Microsoft. You burn it to CD then install it from there. It's intended for people who have slow speed dial up internet. They download it somewhere else, burn the CD then install it on the slow link computer.
