I'm running Vista 64bit Business, no SP1 yet, having issues installing that, different story, other thread.

Rest of the computer

MSI K9N SLI
nVidia 8600GTS 256mb
AMD 6000+ ~3.0ghz
3 GB of RAM (bad RAM stick brought it to 3)

As the description suggests, and the title, I'm receiving DirectX errors. DXDiag shows no issues, and the weirdest part is, that whenever I do a system restore back about 2 days before this was happening, no issues, my games, my other DirectX applications, all load efficiently, no issues. Aero runs fine even when the issues are present, and I've memtested, 0 issues.

I believe I've tried it all. I've cleaned my computer, scanned for virus' and malware through Avast, Adaware, and Spybot. Reinstalled my graphics card drivers (8600GTS 169.25 Forcewares) in safe mode, after using driver cleaner, etc.

I've come to the conclusion that some sort of setting is being changed, a setting that can get reverted after system restore and allow DirectX to operate.

Either way, any help would be appreciated.

Hi Squizzi

I'm not very familiar with Vista, so I might not be accurate here. But we need some more info on the table.

What type of error do you get? The precise error is important here, or we will be shooting in the dark.

What DirectX version are you using?
If you are using DirectX10 , you might wanna try going back to DX9.0c, or vice versa. Your card should support either, otherwise correct me please blush.gif

If you are using DirectX9.0c, you can try use a DirectX uninstaller in order to get rid of any bogus entries. Normally DX can't just be removed, you need a tool to do that (unless a geek, and know where to find all registry entries cool.gif ). A tool for DX9 versions can be found here: (scroll a bit down)

Well, it's really a myriad of errors, Call of Duty 4 for example gives me DirectX has encountered an unrecoverable error, while Company of Heroes gives me a full paragraph of reinstall tips. Every program has it's "error" but they all link back to directX.

Vista can run DX 10 and DX 9.0C side by side, and its best to run the newest 9.0C Package (which I'm doing - March 2008 by the way). However, I'm really thinking about reformating, corruption in my directX seems to be happening, and I'm getting to my 6-8 month reformat point.

And.. I am a geek, I did some .dll deletion, and manually went in to the .cab files to extract the .dlls on my own, making sure the installer did it, etc. No hope. Registry files might be the fix though, I hate the registry (I love Linux.. don't want to go there, I'm also a gamer smile.gif.) Either way, many thanks for the reply.. I was beginning to think everyone was clueless. I'm going to try the uninstaller.

Hi Squizzi

Hehe, you reformat every 6-8 month?

Anyways, the first couple of times i ran CoD4 (And Far Cry, CoH and UT) I also got all sorts of weird DLL related errors. Until I got the right Driver for my card (1024mb GF 8600GT). Also a gamer tongue.gif , altho i use my card primarily for graphics work-related jobs (hence the 1024mb version) So it may boil down to a driver-issue, i dunno how many you tried or if you are running the officiel one from Nvidia.
Because, until i got the right driver, my games acted up, but rest of the PC ran smooth and well, so it was clearly a DLL problem in my case, maybe yours too....

As a side-thought, have you checked you aint having some bad sectors on your HD(s)??

Anyways, let me know if the DX uninstaller did the trick wink.gif

Yeah, I've gone through about 6 driver installs in the past 3 days pullhair.gif ... I've found the 163.25 November 2007 drivers to be the best and most stable drivers for my system and games.

However, the uninstaller didn't work out.. sadly, most likely I'll be reformatting tomorrow, since I'm also having Windows Update errors, hindering my abilities to install SP1.

I'll check my HD sectors, but my comp IS only 7 months old, with a 6 month old 250GB HDD (My bootable primary partition) and a 120GB IDE, which is a bit older. (No DX files would even be on it)

Thanks again for the help.

I reformatted today, you can close the thread, reformatting vista is a breeze over XP, yay Microsoft got something right!

SP1 of course installed on a brand new installation with no hitches, and DirectX of course is functioning well.

Thanks Abydos for the help smile.gif
