Hi there,
had to recreate whole system fm original Toshiba recovery disc. Lost DVD capability (model sd-r2512), still plays CD. Checked device manager:
1. DMA controller at first "no driver present", attempts to restore/update failed, now after few reboots gone for good!
2. DVD Rom properties: locked to region, number of changes left=0, driver 5.1.2335.0
3. IDE controllers: aux IRQ-15, main IRQ-14
been looking around the net - Toshiba main EU page - nothing.
Any help and/or assistance appreciated

bikbok01,

What OS are you running - XP or Vista? Is it that your drive is not showing up at ALL or are you having issues with playing DVDs in your drive. You mentioned that yu can place CDs in the drive. This tells me that your PC/OS is recognizing the hardware. Are you in the US. Could this be a DVD Region issue?

Reply with more information (provided you're STILL having this problem) and I might be able to provide further assistance.

- John

Hi John,
a. winxp home sp2, non us, drive locked to region 2 - no changes available.
Yes PC/OS see and plays CD but since it a CD/dvd rom OS signals "dvd format not compatible with Windows"
b. device manager says the driver is fm 2001 - any attempt to update it failed
c. did upgrade the firmaware fm Toshiba site - still nothing
d. tried to remove it and let windows install it again - nothing
e. tried to play rented dvd - same thing, use to work however
thanks in advance

you will need a bootable dvd to test your drive, do you know anyone with a vista one?

those slimlines don't hold up very well, it's best not to overuse them, reading cd's is irrelevant, too different to dvd's
