hi all -

not a techie so this is all new to me - - here is the problem and summary of what i have done

* CPU runs at 100% when new, HP Photosmart 7200 is installed
* ran system restore, Unilblue Registry and Spybot - tons of clean up occurred
* i also removed Classes_CLSID {87D...} registry based on a website recommendation
* that made CPU % run nice - dropping to 5% running 100% - normal - i had 7 IE eindows open with streaming data - no problem
* used the computer for 1/2 day - - turning on/off - multiple web windows - no issues
* then i realized - i had restored the system to a point in time when i hadn't installed the new printer - the HP Photosmart 7200 (never dawned on me the printer was the problem)
* then i installed the printer and i am right back to 100% CPU usage all the time - IE runs OK but not as fast as i'd like

any ideas? as another data point - i can use that printer on other laptops on the house (it is installed wirelessly) and no other laptop has the CPU usage issue)

Did you check the HP website for newer printer drivers?

Make and model of computer? Windows version?

Have you scanned for malware?

These are all enhanced Task Managers that will tell you what is running, including within each svchost. Each is nice in its own way. What's Running is probably the easiest, with AutoRuns for the more experienced.

AutoRuns for Windows
Process Explorer
What's Running

I'm very frustrated with the same problem, and plan to return the printer under warranty.

HP knows about it but doesn't acknowledge the problem on their web site or by calling customer support. I tried email support and telephone support, and they essentially refuse to escalate, and the support people say that it isn't in their database and they don't know, but it could be Windows.

I found a bunch of notes on forums that explained that it is one of many services that run under Windows services (svchost.exe). It is named something like HPSLPSVC32.DLL. To kill it, I downloaded and ran Process Explorer. (It required me to also download and load a Microsoft debugging tool). Then you run Process Explorer, see the process that is hogging up the machine, click on it, then click on the "Threads" tab, click on the one that is hogging the system, and then press the "Kill" button. You won't then be able to use the printer, but at least you get the system back to normal use (until the next reboot, in which case you have to do it again.

What the function is doing is scanning the network for printers on the network, and it runs amok and acts like a virus or spyware that is hogging the computer's resources.

I was only getting it on my laptop, and then it started happening after a month on my desktop. HP seems to have no interest in solving or even acknowledging the problem, but thousands of people are having it.

I suggest returning the printer.

This may be of no help at all.
But any time any more I have to install a new piece of hardware I simply install the drivers I need.
I almost refuse to install any of their bundled software such as photo this or photo that image copy this and that from any vendor. They have so many unneeded applications when you just use their install software. (such as all in one ) it'll make your head spin and your computer stop.

Example installed a second/ new to me HP printer and it wanted to install all the other software. I just pulled the drivers off their site and away I went.
