Hi Everyone,

I have got a strange networking problem if anyone wants to have a stab at it!

The problem is that i can be assigned an IP address for the internet through my Belkin 54g router, however it will not assign me an IP address for the internet when the ethernet cable is directly plugged into my laptop from my modem. I called my ISP because they just installed a new modem and there was no problem obtaining an IP address through the old modem. They took me through their procedures (which didn't reslove the problem) and then said its my network card which isn't functioning correctly. This, i think is their attempt to get away from the problem as this is happening to all the computers (Laptops) in the house and i also checked the network card on my laptop and it is functioning correctly...

Has anyone got any suggetions of what could be wrong?

Thanks in advance...

Andrew

Andrew, Welcome to WTT smile.gif

I wanted to re-cap to be sure I have an understanding of what you've tryed and how things are connected.

When you connect direct to the modem with your laptop you can't get on the internet, (no ip being assigned). Your router will get an IP assigned to it, and then the laptop
can connect and gets an IP assigned to it and has no problem connecting to the internet. Is that about correct?

Couple of things I thought of, Does the laptop work if you plug into the ports on your router?
You mentioned more than one laptop all have the same problem, do you have any desktops that are working with the wired connections?

Some of these question might help to answer where the problem might be.
Another quick thought was who's your ISP, whos modem and what brand, if you know.
