Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2
Gateway M250 532MHz Single DD2RAM Mobile Pentium M 735 (Dothan) 1.73GHz my notebook is acting strange tonight. It went into standby (blinking power light) while i was using it and i could not wake it up. I held down the power button to do a hard reset and it turned off completely. when it didn't restart, i pressed the power button. the power light came on and the hard drive light came on, but the screen, hard drive, and fan remained off. I tried unplugging the battery and plugging it back in. it booted normally. about 10 minutes later it went alseep again. the battery trick didn't work the second time. I removed the batter and tried to start it with just ac. when i pressed the power button, it would light up momentarily and then turn back off. I waited an hour and tried again and it worked. for about 20 minutes. this time i just tried rebooting about 5 times and the 5th time it worked. so here i am... waiting for it to turn off again. what now? Hi, Sorry to hear of the problem with your notebook.
You can see that I've edited your post......as you know we don't analyse HJT logs on this sub-forum. If you want your HJT log analysed by a Malware removal expert, then please post the full log (not the attachmement) in the malware removal forum, as you have done in the past. 1 When faced with an intermittent booting problem of this nature, it was very wise of you to remove the battery and try again on mains power. The next step would be to disconnect any peripherals, USB flash drives, external drives, printers scanners etc so that your machine is running as lean as possible with only the power supply connected and nothing else at all. 2 Next step is to visit Start>Control panel>Power options and here meticulously check for accuracy, all your settings to see that they meet with your requirements. If this still does not help then 3 Reboot into safe mode and try using an earlier System Restore Point to "put back the clock" to a time when your machine was working well. Let us know go you go and if you do decide you want your HJT log analysed we will be happy to continue here in this sub-forum to help with any issues you have with your machine once the malware removal expert has confirmed that your log looks clean. Regards paws |

i had no peripherals plugged in. for some reason, in the power options the hard disks were set to turn off after 30 mins. I fixed that and so far no problems.

well, it turned off again about 30 min after my last post. I had to come down to the library to make this post.
I removed the ram, hard drive, battery, and all other peripherals and it still won't turn on. if i try to turn it on with either just the battery or just the ac power, the powerlight comes on and turns off right away. if i have both the battery and the ac plugged in, the power and hard drive light turn on and stay on and nothing else happens. i can hold down the power button for about 5 secs to turn it off. so what next? P.S. I can't boot into safe mode because it won't turn on... This post has been edited by junkforaaron: Jan 10 2008, 05:19 PM |

Hi, OK
This is not looking good. 1 Is the machine under warranty/guarantee or service agreement? 2 Are you familiar with and did you observe all required personal safety and anti static precautions whilst working on your machine.? 3 Did you remove battery before removing the RAM cover and Hard drive? 4 With Battery in and Ac power on, switch on your machine, look at the LED's on the back of the computer and tell me please the colour and state (solid or blinking) of the LED's or if you have no illuminated LED at all. 5 Has anyone who has had access to your machine visited the BIOS or set up a power on password? Some folks do this sort of thing for a joke!, (but it's really not funny.) 6 Have you tried the usual steps to get your machine out of sleep or hibernation mode? 7 When you have battery in and Ac power on , and machine switched on, does the hard drive spin, can you see/hear vibrations, or movement of the fan? Was there a burning odour? 8 Try to boot from your installation CD or a Knoppix disc (live Linux distro) and tell us what happens. Depending on the answers to the above, you may be facing contacting Gateway for further diagnostic/repair. Regards paws |

1 no warranty
2 followed anti-static precautions 3 Did remove battery before removing the RAM and Hard drive 4 when battery is in the licght blinks red once as the ac is plugged in. that's all. 5 nobody has messed with it 6 yes 7 no hard drive spin, no vibrations, no fan, no odor. power light blinks once, nothing else happens. 8 does not attempt to access CD drive when power button is pressed [sigh]. |

Hi,
Ok. If you can find an identical power supply, this would be worth trying ( In case your battery is discharged and the original power supply faulty.) If still no joy then it looks like, it might be worth contacting Gateway, Regards paws |
