Hi,
Welcome back to the forum. Sorry to hear of the problem with your sister's lap top computer.
If Windows is shut down whilst certain elements of Windows Update are running (or trying to run) then it is possible to cause serious damage including inability to access the operating system.

We are willing to provide assistance on how you mighty proceed, but before doing anything it might be best to consult the retailer/manufacturer/or their appointed service agent to see if they will entertain providing assistance under the guarantee/warranty or service agreement to your sister's new laptop.

The operating system may be recoverable without having to reinstall it, but any action you take now might make the task more difficult, so at this stage it may be wise to take no action at all until the retailer/manufacturer/service agents have been consulted. Do you have a Windows installation disc or manufacturers restore disc for the operating system?

Please ask your sister to check that her back up/archive of all important files, settings, andany other important stuff is 100% up to date, verified and reproducable.

Good luck and please post back and tell us the response you receive from the retailer/manufacturer/service agent.
Regards

hi paws,

i spoke with my sister today and she said that the problem with taking it back to the store is that she bought it as an open box laptop from compusa because it had a DVD Rom problem, but they had fixed that problem for her. Even if is an open box laptop do you think that the store would give a 30 day warranty on it or something?

thanks
