Hello and thanks in advance to anyone who can help me! I've had updates ready to install on my computer for days now and they will not install!

When I go to the microsoft update page (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) I click Express.

It scans and then tells me:

Download size (total): 0 KB *
Estimated time at your connection speed: 0 minutes *
(*Downloaded; ready to install)

So I click Install. It gives it a go and then decides it can't do it and brings up the following screen (see attachment).

I am at a loss. I tried dissabling my Kaspersky Internet Security for a minute while I went through the process again just incase it was Kaspersky that was stopping it for some reason but it just did the same thing.

Can anyone help????

AGHHHHHHHHH!!!!! MICROSOFT!!! I HATE MICROSOFT!!! }:=[

Thanks for the link, but it seems to have tried to enter me into the loop I was in before I posted this topic. I actually visited the microsoft site (I have visited it hundreds of times over this probably!!!!)

Because my windows was installed on the computer when I got it, they redirect me to Dell - my computer manufacturer.

So I wrote to Dell, who then e mailed back with a link to a help page which was actually supposed to be a Vista help page.

Then I got a reply from microsoft which basically said - we can't help you.

Oh man! And then I tried looking for alternative places for help on the microsoft site - like alternative ways just to try to speak to a human being. They do absolutely everything they can to NOT talk to you. I hate them.

Never mind. I will keep trying wall.gif

Try re-registering the Windows update dll as suggested by the following
post: http://forums.vnunet.com/message.jspa?messageID=870658

Also re-register the windows update components. This may help fix a
corrupt installer

1. Click on Start and Run,
2. Type REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL and press Enter.
3. Should get the message DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded, Click OK.
4. Repeat for each of the following:

REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

5. Reboot then try it again.

If not better, you can download the latest installer from MS and see if this helps: http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/wininstallnt.html

Hi troubleddude,

First of all I would go here http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and validate your Window OS.
Making sure this is correct saves allot of time.

Next, I suggest you go to Automatic updates through Start > control panel "Automatic Updates" and turn them off. The reason for this is as follows:

Windows Secrets first disclosed on Sept. 13, 2007, http://windowssecrets.com/2007/09/13/01-Mi...t-users-consent that Microsoft had been silently downloading Windows Update (WU) executable components on users' computers — even when the users' auto-update settings required advance permission. Each month if you do turn your Automatic Updates off, you alone will be responsible for logging into http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdat...t.aspx?ln=en-us and clicking on CUSTOM to download and install all updates relevant to your system. Please do not choose any Windows suggested hardware updates from this site, go to your Manufacturers website to update hardware for your system when/if needed.

Now to try to get on top of your current update problem.

Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Reboot and attempt to run Windows Update once again.

If no joy, then I suggest you carry out the following:

Get the Latest Java from the link below. It is, version 6 update 7 (build 1.6.0_07-bo6) Uninstall all old versions through Add and Remove as they are vulnerable.

Download and run the following program. Update anything you use that's FREE. If it's a paid program, you may have to pay for it again.

Also clean the unwanted files out of your computer with CCleaner below.

Now if all the above fails, try the following and see how you go.I have posted this so many times on forum help sites so here it is again and I hope it helps you out.

Step 1:
Verify that your computer's date and time are accurate and that Internet Explorer language option is not empty.
To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:
1. Click "Tools" and then choose "Internet Options"
2. Click the lanuage button
3. Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language Options" dialog.

When checking your date (including the year) and time, also check the Internet Time and Time Zone. Double click on the date/time in the notification/system tray area (near the clock) select Internet Time Tab and then select update now. If it's not already checked, check automatically synchronize with an internet Time Server - WinXP.

Step 2:
Also check these settings:
1. Tools >Internet Options > Advanced
2. Scroll down to the Security Settings.
3. Make sure that the two boxes are checked that say "Enable SSL 2" or "Enable SSL 3".
4. Uncheck "Check for server certificate revocation".

Step 3:
Also delete Temporary Internet Files
1. Tools >Internet Options >General
2. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files, Clck OK

Step 4:
1. Tools > Internet Options > Security
Click Trusted sites, click Default level.
Click the sites button and clear the checkbox "Require server verification"
(http:) for all sites in this zone."
Now add the following:
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

If required, reboot and try Windows Update again. If still no success, have a look at the following links for more clues.

Make sure you haven't got anything blocking Windows Update like
Nortons,
Zonealarm etc
Also make sure you don't have a Web Accelerator working in the backgound such as
Net Zero
HiSpeed
Speedband etc

Clear out your temporary internet cache...AGAIN

Try a reboot and then try WU yet again.

Are there any specific error codes that you do see?
At what point does it continue when checking for the latest software, or when checking for updates?

Still no joy, then try Renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder

Click START, Choose Run
In the Run box, type "services.msc. " (without the quotes)
Click OK
Right click the Automatic Updates service,
Click stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder :
a. Click Start, click Run, type "%systemroot%" (without the quotes") and then click OK.
b. Right click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click START
Choose Run
In the Run box, type "services.msc." without the quotes"
Click OK
Right -click the Automatic Updates service
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

Reboot if appropriate and try WU again.

Note when you rename the SoftwareDistribution folder - you will loose your WU history but not important.

Your Windows Update problem is exactly the same as I was having sometime ago and by going through the above (supplied from a Microsoft Newsgroup exchange) you should correct your problem and allow you to download and install WU's again.

Only problem with that is that far more often than not, a manual update would fail, and when the code is looked-up, it will say "automatic update service is not running".

A better option would be to select "Notify me but do not automatically download or install them." That way the "service" will not be disabled and the Update site won't complain about it.

Another "trick" that works sometimes is to not use the IE---tools---windows update. Instead click Start---All programs, then at the top of the program list, select -windows update-.

Lots of good info otherwise !

It is up to you what you decide to do. If you turn off Windows Updates as suggested above, once a month, say the third week of the month, go to Automatic Updates enable "Notify me but don't automatically download and install them", reboot and then follow the usual procedure.

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • click on tools
  • Scroll to Windows updates
  • Choose custom
  • you are then able to enable what you want to download and install.
I have chosen to execute the above which works well for me, so I can recommend it to you.

Hi Tallin

I think it was the PC time that did it, I had got down as far as that with no success and the update was 'hung' in the background, when I synchronised the time the install started and completed successfully. Odd though as the time has always only been out by about 10 minutes (a problem with syncing to our Win 2003 Server I think) and updates have worked previously, just not in the last two weeks.

The http://filehippo.com/updatechecker/ link was useful also and I did update Silverlight - another possibility.


Sorry I can't be more clear, but thanks again, it was definitely some way through your post that the problem was resolved!
