Background Information:
Home built computer??? (havent had problems in forever, first problem)
2.6 GHz
1.5 GB RAM
81 Gb HD
Windows XP Service Pack 1
Radeon 9800 pro

Issue
Hello tech team, ive been directed to you by TomK, who did wonders in helping me so far.

I did a repair install and went from sp3 to sp1. Tom helped me remove unnecessary programs from my computer, and suggested that i now try to update my windows.

I have Xp home edition with automatic updates on. I try to run auto updates and it downloads fine, but the install comes up with the following copy errors.

ntoskrnl.exe

Dial-a-fix came up with these errors below.

C:\WINNT\system32\wups.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\wups2.dll

I have tried to reregister some files that helped others by doing the following....

regsvr32.exe c:\winnt\system32\wuweb.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\winnt\system32\wups2.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\winnt\system32\wups.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\winnt\system32\wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\winnt\system32\wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\winnt\system32\wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\winnt\system32\wuapi.dll

but it has not worked either.

Here is the previous thread to list all of my logs

thank you in advance for everything, you all are awesome!

ummm, so it seems that I forgot to activate windows online. I must have simply overlooked the little keys in the bottom corner. I have now genuinely confirmed it and activated windows.

I hope the updates work now. smile.gif

I will let you all know, thanks.

well i thought that may have fixed the problem but it didnt.

At least the update now wants to go directly to service pack 2 as the install.

It downloads, but upon installation an error message appears and says access denied, with that little red "x".

I have no clue what this means.

Anyone have any clues?

Thanks

Hi SK2200,

Try the following, I have had good success with other Members that have had your problem when using the instructions below.

Method 1: If Windows Updates will download but not install
Go here and see if it works

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/

Fix any issues, then validate it.

If it still doesn't work try this:

Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below:

  • Click the Start button
  • choose Run
  • type cmd and then click OK.

Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Then attempt to run Windows Update again.

Method 2: Other Steps you can take to fix Windows Update
Is it still not working? These steps sometimes work to resolve the issue:

Step 1:
Verify that your computer's date and time are accurate and that Internet Explorer language option is not empty.

To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:
1. Click "Tools" and then choose "Internet Options"
2. Click the lanuage button
3. Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language Options" dialog.

When checking your date (including the year) and time, also check the Internet Time and Time Zone.

Double click on the date/time in the notification/system tray area (near the clock) select Internet Time Tab and then select update now. If it's not already checked, check automaticallysynchronize with an internet Time Server - WinXP.

Step 2:
Also check these settings:
1. Tools>Internet Options> Advanced
2. Scroll down to the Security Settings.
3. Make sure that the two boxes are checked that say "Enable SSL 2" or "Enable SSL 3".
4. Uncheck "Check for server certificate revocation".

Step 3:
Also delete Temporary Internet Files
1. Tools >Internet Options >General
2. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files, Click OK

Step 4:
1. Tools >Internet Options >Security
Click Trusted sites, click Default level.
Click the sites button and clear the checkbox "Require server verification"
http: for all sites in this zone."
Now add the following:
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

If required, reboot and try Windows Update again. If still no success, have a look at the following links for more clues.

Method 3, rename the SoftwareDistribution Folder:

  • Click Start Choose Run
  • In the Run box, type "services.msc" (without the quotes)
  • Click OK
  • Right click the Automatic Updates service
  • Click stop
  • Stopping the service will take a moment
Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder :

a. Click Start, click Run, type "%systemroot%" (without the quotes) and then click OK.
b. Right click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

  • Click START
  • Choose Run
  • In the Run box, type "services.msc" without the quotes"
  • Click OK
  • Right-click the Automatic Updates service
  • Click Start. Starting the service will take a moment
  • Reboot if appropriate and try WU again.
Note when you rename the SoftwareDistribution folder - you will lose your history but not important.

The aim here is to help you solve this 0x800A138F problem and have you updating your Windows XP
Professional or Home Edition computer as soon as possible. http://www.updatexp.com/

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page.

_________

Make sure you haven't got anything blocking Windows Update like
Nortons
Zonealarm etc
Also make sure you don't have a Web Accelerator working in the backgound such as
Net Zero
HiSpeed
Speedband etc

Clear out your temporary internet cache. Try a reboot and then try WU again.

This information was given to me from a Microsoft information Newsgroup discussion I had when having problems myself with Windows Updates installing some time ago.

If none of the above works, try the following:

Here is a link that may also help you, but please read all the information first before plunging in to use it.

Best regards, and good luck,

Edit: Sk2200, I was answering your first post when I discovered you were still posting!

I have done the first method as you said.

I checked out the second method and none of it applied to me, everything was already checked or unchecked as it should be.

I have begun running the service pack 2 and have gotten about 2/3 through the installation. It is, however, stuck on "checking for necessary space" with details "running processes before install"

I'm gonna let it run and do its thing and see if it moves or not. I have plenty of Gb's left, so space shouldnt be a problem, unless it is talking about a different kind of space.

If this doesnt work tonight, i will do method 3 and post an update tomorrow.

Thank you for the help so far.

Okay, your doing well, can you send me details of your HD with a screen shot similar to mine attached.
  • Right Click on My Computer if on your dekstop
  • Open
  • Right Click on C:\Drive
  • Scroll to Properties
  • That should bring you to the required information.
Post it if you can....as that will show me what space you have on your HD.

Continue as you are, slow and sure and please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Hello sk2200,

Looking at the restricted space on your Hard Drive, there is very little room there for a successful defragmenation to be successfully done. How long is it since you defragged your C:\Drive? You need at least 15% of free space, you have around 20% which in my opinion is only just enough.

Can you free up some of the unwanted programs through Add and Remove if in fact there are any.

I read your entire log that Tomk helped you with, and now see that he has already given you the Dial-a-Fix utility and you have run it.

I would not run my Windows Update Methods while you are attempting to install SP2. You need to either stop that install and run my suggestions or install SP2, then try the methods I have supplied, not both at the same time.

Keep us posted how you are progressing please.

kind regards,

hi,

1) so many things have happened recently. I woke up, and got the blue screen of death twice. Didn't get that at all last night in the 25 times i restarted the computer.

It gave me the error IQRL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

2) I deleted lots of stuff and freed up some GB's.

3) I compressed old files and then tried to defrag. Upon trying to do so, i got the error, could no open C:\WINNT\system32\dfrg.msc

4) I tried to install service pack 2 again, and got a new error. "Could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is working properly."

Soooo, that is the update on what is going on.

Here is another look at my C: drive and the amount of space i cleared up.

Let me know if any of this helps. I also am still getting the ntoskrnl.exe error sometimes while updating.

tallin,

Seeing as how this issue appears to be more progressing back to where sk2200 was in the malware forum, I've reopened his thread so that I can poke around some more. I'll make a couple passes at the problem then ship him back if still a no-go.

Thanks Tomk,

Good idea, trying to install SP2 at the same time as all the other problems is asking a bit much I think.

Tomk,

What do you mean headscratch.gif " no go"?

Your the professional, I am the amateur.... Of course there are others in the Tech department who have huge knowledge.

Best regards,

Edit: Tom, and sk2200,

I think the problem installing SP2 is not enough room on the HD....... as it is not able to be defragged with only 20MB free.

you might say "It's not a goer!" meaning it didn't work out.

Update though, after a reboot, it appears to have started working. thumbup.gif

I've closed the HJT thread and sk2200 will be posting results here eventually. popcorn.gif
