Hi,
I have Windows XP SP2 installed on my PC - problem is when I start my PC the system keeps crashing / rebooting. It takes about 5-6 attempts before PC will work. Also I get blue screen at times.

I have checked/repaired any malware issues and the system seem's to be malware free at the moment.

I have ran chkdsk 3 times - it found errors in the Volume Bitmap so I ran chkdsk c: /F 3 times also - however, the problem is not fixed - system is still crashing.

Would appreciate any assistance on this.

thanks

Hi and welcome to the WTT forums.
welcome.gif
Sorry to hear of the problems with your machine.
This sounds as though you have serious problems with your hard drive..... I hope your back up/ccopy/archive of all your important stuff is 100% up to date accurate, reproducible and kept safe on removable media. If you need to replace the hard drive, having this handy will save a lot of time.
If by any chance it is not completely up to date then your first step should be to bring it up to date and check it's reproducible.

Next it is worth running chkdsk again, but this time use the r switch..... the command is
ckkdsk /r
see if this helps...if it finds and correct problems then run it again.... just to be sure
The r switch covers more ground and automatically includes all the procedures in the f switch along with extras.
If you are still having problems then its worth downloading the disc checking utility from the manufacturers of your particular hard drive, putting on a CD and checking the disc that way....it will tell you if you need to buy a new hard drive.
Regards

Ok,
dont worry!
If the chkdsk /r hasn't done the trick then try downloading the hard disc manufacturers disc checking utility.......when you have downloaded it burn it to CD (so you can boot from it) and take it from there.

If you have any problems with any of this, report back with the make and model number of your computer and the make of hard drive that it is fitted with and we will advise how to proceed.

Hi
Its the disc manufactures name thats importnat ( have a look in Device manager) so you can visist their website and download the disc checking tools to see whats going on.

Two questions for you:

1 Have you backed up everthing (that's important to you) on your machine, to external media, including docs, photos, settings, drivers, emails, favourites, etc? and kept the executables for your Applications safe together with your other Application install discs, serial keys and your Windows Install disc and serial key?

2 What happened when you ran checkdsk /r
and what was the screen message at the end?
