Windows Updates, Cannot Update

Authentic Member Group: Authentic Member Posts: 52 Joined: 30-January 05 Member No.: 24,411	I am running XP Home, SP1, and noticed last week I cannot update automatically or manually from the windows update site. All updates say update failed. I have gone to an update newsgroup and it seems I am not the only one having problems with the new updates, but no solutions there. I recently had help from here and cleaned my system from a mess, installed and am running all the suggested programs and system is running clean. BUt just wonder if maybe one of these programs may be stopping the updates. I tried to disable firewall, Spyware guard, but still no luck with updates. Also, when I was cleaning the system at one point I received an error but continued and all went well, but have notioced others when this happened were told to download and install XPHOMEfile. I was not told to do this and as I said, system seems to be OK, but was wondering if I should/could do this without any problems. Any suggestions??? Larry

Authentic Member Group: Authentic Member Posts: 47 Joined: 9-February 05 Member No.: 25,139	A friend has more or less the same prob, the reason why he can't upgrade is because of the key that he is using for his Windows XP, its a corporate key that is blocked by Microsoft and doesn't let him install the XPSP2 after having downloaded it, but he was able to upgrade everything else though...

To do this, it installs an activex control and checks the version of windows. If it is not working, it could be that the activex is being blocked. Or, your version of windows isn't legit

Authentic Member Group: Authentic Member Posts: 52 Joined: 30-January 05 Member No.: 24,411	This copy legit, computer came with it........but, when we cleasned the system up here, I know I was advised to delete all the activeX references from the registry saying they would be recreated if needed. This is the same time that the updates stopped downloading so you could very well be correct in why it is not working, just have no idea how to correct the problem.

If it is, right click it and select "update"

Try these steps: Bring up a command prompt and type proxycfg -d to clear the proxy cache (if you are using one). Type net stop wuauserv to stop the automatic updates service. Open Windows Explorer and browse to C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution. Delete the contents of this folder. Go Back to the command prompt and type net start wuauserv to restart the automatic updates. Now retry Windows update. Let us know what happens. OT
