I have Windows XP 64 Pro installed, and I believe I may have been hijacked. Some background program is eating my ram availability and I can't figure out what it is. I've run Avast, but it still occurs. I've run memtest and it indicates no errors.

How can I narrow down the culprit and get it out of there? I've attached a Hijack This Report.

Have a look in your windows Task Manager - Processes(tab)

You should probably get a good idea of what's currently running from the CPU column.
(If the machine is "at rest" meaning you are not currently running anything active even if you have a few windows open, then System Idle Precess should read in the 97%-99% range.

If something else seems to be persistently using your CPU (background defrag, background antivirus scan, etc.) then that is your culprit.

If something entirely strange is using CPU, then either google the item to identify it, or if you suspect Malware (svchost.exe is showing internet activity even though you are not actively browsing) then head on over to our Malware Removal Forum.
(if you suspect Malware), read here.

I think I found the culprit. I keep getting W32.Fasec. I will go over to the Malware section. Thanks, RC
