I would like to get a hardware firewall for less than $150 and was wondering what you would recommend?

make sure the NAT router has built in SPI (firewall) also a good idea to use a software firewall like ZA

Good point shelf life. A layered approach to security is the best approach.

With a nat router it will block incoming, however if for some reasons somthing does get onto your system it will happily call home and your router wont help. A software firewall like ZoneAlarm free will notify if something is trying to call out.
