I would be most grateful for some advice concerning my Toshiba Satellite 1400 which seems to be running increasingly slower despite a weekly registry cleaning routine of : PC Pitstop Optimize 2, One-Click-Optimizer, Registry Mechanic, jv16 PowerTools 2009 Registry Cleaner, RegistryBooster 2009, followed by JKDefrag.

Of 18.6 GB 6.48GB is free. At purchase 30-10-2002 I doubled Ram to 256MB.

Task Manager shows while idle: Paged Memory at 80% of Total. CPU Usage hovers around 5% and PF Usage sits at 637MB, Handles 11341, Threads 535 , Processes: 47 Commit Charge 653192K / 804596K Peak 751960 - if this is of any use.

Below is the logfile which I hope will be helpful

Attached File  hjtlog.txt ( 9.16K ) Number of downloads: 3

Thanking you in anticipation,

Warren Boyes

Hi Garbo.

Sorry about the long delay for a response.

Without considering any other potential problems with your laptop I can safely say you have way too little RAM to do anything efficiently on your computer. It is not an overstatement to say that 256MB of RAM is not enough to boot Windows efficiently let alone do anything else. The single largest factor in how slow your computer is running is the memory and you need to get it to at least 512MB but preferably larger.

I must tell you that you are really playing with fire using all those programs you listed in the beginning. Even if one or two of them are helpful, you have really overkilled the whole "tuneup" progam things. Of all the programs the registry cleaners are the worst and are literally playing with fire. THe tuneup programs often times can not do anything more than they could the first time you ran them and now they sit idley by taking up even more system resources and ultimately slowing your computer down. These very programs may be a contributing factor to the problems you are having now. If you continue to follow along with any advice I give you, you can be sure that the first thing I tell you to do is uninstall every single one of those programs.

In order to get a better idea of other factors that may be slowing your computer down, please post a PCPitStop test to the forum. Here is how:
How to run PCPitStop's Overdrive tests:
  • Please click here to go to the PCPitStop Overdrive sign-up page: Signup at PCPitStop (You need to use Internet Explorer with this test so that an ActiveX control can be installed.)
  • Click "Create a free account"
  • Enter in your relevant information on the sign-up page. You must sign-up in order to have your results recorded so that we can take a look at them here.
  • After signing up you'll see the "Registration Complete" page, and you can click "Test Your System Now" to return to the test page.
  • Login with your newly created e-mail address and password on the left hand side.
  • Follow the directions to "Scan this system now." An activeX control will need to be installed. It is safe, and you should allow it to be installed.
  • Once the tests have been run, you will see an "Almost there" page requesting further information about your computer and your experience with PCPitStop, just scroll down to the bottom and click "GO."
  • A test results page will display, and I need the link to that page.
  • Look in the address bar of your browser. It will look like 'http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/...' Please copy and paste that here to the forum.

Note: PCPitStop may recommend that you use certain utilities to fix problems on your computer. At WhatTheTech, the help we provide is free. We do not endorse or recommend the use of any products PCPitStop may suggest. Instead, we prefer to help you with each issue manually without using possible pay to use programs.
