Hi,

My computer is running slow most of the time. I have run several antispyware programmes but nothing shows up. Also my hard drive seems to be working and chugging away most of the time, even when I'm not using any of my applications. Also Task Manager isn't working (it opens but when I try to close any programme with it, nothing happens) and I wonder if there's any connection to the previously mentioned problem. I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium. Thanks for any help you are able to give.

Let's have a look at your machine's overall performance.
QUOTE
Please Run the PCPitstop Full Tests, here:
http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp
Register and create a password
Accept the ActiveX component to allow your machine to run the Full Tests
Registering and accepting the ActiveX are both SAFE and FREE.
Full Tests is the first item in the left hand column of that page.

The Full Tests take less than 5 minutes for most machines.
Once you have your Results, please post the TechExpress Link back here into this thread for review.
TechExpress is the last item on the list in the yellow box in upper right area of any Results page.
Post the entire URL link information back here into this Forum thread.

Caution: During the testing of Video Adapter, a variety of patterns, shapes, colors and text are “flashed” onto the users monitor screen. In the many thousands of daily uses of the PCPitstop Full Tests over several years, two individuals who suffer epilepsy experienced discomfort and temporary dizziness when viewing the flashing patterns.
If you know that you are susceptible to photo driven seizure, look away from your screen during the Video Adapter testing sequence.

Since you are running a Vista OS, please open an instance of IE by right-clicking on IE icon and selecting "Run As Administrator"
Doing so will allow you to take advantage of all the features of the PCPitstop Full Tests.
(Be sure to "close" that same instance of IE after you have completed the Full Tests. For security reasons you should never do "general browsing" with your operating system configured as "run as administrator".

Post your results and we'll see if we can spot the glitch that may be causing your problem.

Please don't get distracted with the various "Paid Product and utility offers".
We'll help you get any problems fixed without using paid or automated tools.

Best Regards,
Doug

Greetings NormanR

Sorry you got missed. You didnt do anything wrong.

All the folks here are volunters and Doug in particular is on several different forums at once. Has dozens of threads going at any one time.

Rare that he misses anyone he gets started with. Not that anyone person owns a thread, it is an exchange of ideas and not a YOU fix me forum or I will seriously frown at you kind of place. People chime in if they have something to contribute or stay out and watch if they dont.

Usually a email is triggered and sent to a helper when someone makes a reply to a thread. It has been known that sometimes that the email doesnt happen or gets blocked along the way. Tight email filters.

Now with that said:

Looking at the pcpitstop results you posted you have a number of issues that could be slowing the computer down.

Many unneeded startup items, a highly fragmented drive, too many antivirus software programs running at the same time also some device drivers that need updating.

All of those things can be fixed in due course.

The most disturbing thing is the RegistryCleanFix2008 you have installed, this has been linked to a Trojan called MonaRonaDona.

This infection is pure social engineering and trys to get you to purchase unneeded software for a non-existant problem.

I would highly recomend getting a opinion from the Malware experts on this forum on how to remove this trojan if you have it.

I am almost certain they will have you remove one of your antivirus apps from the start. You have one too many.

I would recomend losing either avg or Spywaredoctor. Keep the one you paid for if that is the case, otherwise I would keep the AVG.

Two antivirus apps tend to "fight" each other in trying to scan files in "real time". You get slow downs, crashes, locks and freezes and many times internet access fails.

Once the Malware folks give you a clean bill of health, we can start optimizing your computer for better performance.

Post back to this thread after the Malware Experts give you the green light.

I'm sorry to hear of your frustration NormanR.

Someone will pick up the post in the malware thread. I saw the "reminder" in th comments thread, once it's picked up someone will remove that post.

I know it's not easy but try to be patient, If I had to guess I would say one of the malware volenteers will be working on your prblems within a couple of days.
Also try to remember that it's all volenteers that have real lives and real jobs so sometimes it can take awhile to get to problems, They're is also a shortage of malware fighter so the ones that are posting are also overworked. smile.gif

Good luck!

Best regards
Tonka

I don 't understand either, though I do know the malware area of this site is very busy. I just added a plea for help in our tech only forum, hopefully someone will "rediscover" you soon. Hang in there ...

Gringo_pr has just responded to your post in the malware forum. Looks like you're off and running. Post back when you have a clean bil of healt if you still have problems. Sorry this took so long but as I mentioned, the malware area of this site is very busy (as are malware areas of all good tech support sites).

Hello Kaz,

Having followed your sugestions with regard to malware problems, I am now confident my computer is running ok. I am still left with the problem of a non working task manager as originally posted. Are you able to now help with this?

Regards,
Norman

NormanR,

Are you recieving any message when you attempt to end task on some programs? When you try to end task is it the same program or is it different programs?
I guess I'm asking if it doesn't respond to end task on all prgrams or just a certain one or ones?

Hi There,

It won't close any programme rather than one specific programme. I don't get any message either, it's just inactive.
