Any help would be appreciated

Not enough information provided here to give you any sensible recommendation.

Re-installation of applications is possible using a shadow copy created by Nero, as long as you are attempting to put the applications back into the exact same location, same hardware, and same operating system, that existed before the backup.
Nero Feature Description: http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/Nero_BackItUp_2.html
Nero Support: http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/Support.html

References to "root file" are referring to the Drive where your operating system is installed.
Generally this is C:\
And may be referring to C:\Windows\ (if running XP), or C:\WINNT (if running Windows 2000)

Best Regards

If you are so inclined, please let us know how it goes for you.
Several Members here use Norton Ghost, or Acronis for a similar function.
We could all learn if there is a good working, additional tool available.

Thanks,
Doug

I downloaded the tutorials but they were for Nero 7. This was the first time I had used any kind of backup & I don't think I did it as it should have been done. I'm having a lot of trouble with the computer since I tried to restore, it keeps crashing & sometimes doesn't even start in safe mode. I'm not very technically minded & I have now ordered a separate hard drive.

Thanks for your advice & help

one of the major hazards that users of disk image and backup systems face is that they may have created an image that is faulty and will not serve them well when they really need it.

This "can" be true when using Acronis or Ghost, as well as perhaps when using Nero.

Your best help at this point may be from the Nero Support Forums.

The above, can really be a nightmare for folks who believed that they were securing their system in case of future catastrophic need, only to find that their preparation was somehow flawed.

Generally, an owner/user should "test" the backup to make sure it actually does restore what was intended.
The "test' should be performed BEFORE there is an actual need, so that something can be done about it if necessary.
Having a new Hard Drive can help in the "testing" process.
Specifically, with the "extra" hard drive, the owner/user can perform a restore onto the fresh Hard Drive and then attempt to run the machine. This would give an opportunity to see if the process is working the way you would want it to.
___________

However.....

There may be some additional things we can do here in this Forum.
But we would need additional information.
Please run the Full Tests at http://www.pcpitstop.com
Then post the TechExpress Link to your results, back here into this thread so we can review it with you.

Also post a list of the applications you may be trying to restore and whether or not the restore also contains some of your important documents, files, media, etc.
Hopefully you have separate backup for your documents, media and files.
If not, let us know.

Best Regards

Doug
You're going to have to be patient with me, I'm checking to see how I post. I went on pcpitstop & according to them my system is ok. The programmes I'm most concerned about are the ones where I've downloaded from the web & paid for a registration key. I've got the grandkids at the moment but I'll try & do a list of them when I've figured out the 'posting'bit.

Many thanks
