Wow, wish I had paid attention to this post being 2 years old. Downloaded RegCleaner, the desktop icon did nothing. Decided to just uninstall, how nice, it is not showing up in add/remove programs and is not listed as a program in my Windows programs list. Anybody have any suggestions?

It wasn't installed on your computer!

If you didn't install it....you can't uninstall it. It's installed in your Programs Folder as RegCleaner, inside the folder is an uninstaller.

Just delete the "regcleaner.exe" that was downloaded.

Regcleaner is safe or I wouldn't have recommended it. I use it on all my machines 98 and XP.

Follow the instructions in the post below:

A small note - Always be careful when using Registry Cleaners. I know Regcleaner is OK to use, but I also have seen it deleting the entire Uninstall key in the registry and other keys which were not supposed to be deleted.
So, only use registry cleaners if you have basic knowledge about the registry and know for sure if a certain key may get deleted or not.
I have seen too many Registry Cleaners damaging a registry instead of fixing/Cleaning it.
And, a corrupted registry is a corrupted Windows.

Imho, Registry Cleaners are not really necessary either. Even a heavily fragmented registry won't change much in System speed. It will only affect it when you perform a registry search, which will take longer when a registry is heavily fragmented.

As I've already said elsewhere - if Registry cleaners were really so necessary, why didn't Microsoft add a Registry Cleaning option by default? The same as MS did with the Cleanup Manager (cleanmgr).

So, just don't fix when it ain't brroken smile.gif

To add to what miekiemoes has just stated, if there is really anything that could help remedy the slow degradation of a system to a heavily fragmented pagefile and registry I would go for what is now, I guess, a Microsost product called PageDefrag. Details on what it does and where to download the utility can be found here:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...PageDefrag.mspx

This tool is by Mark Russinovich (Of SysInternals fame). It is light weight, fast and even, in my opinion, Trevuren proof, which means that even I can use it safely.

Go have a read.

Microsoft did offer one a while back: RegClean

Microsoft Office XP and Microsoft Office 2000 users should read this before using:

Most reg cleaners aren't "bad" as such, but they aren't perfect and even the best have been known to cause problems.
The point we are trying to make is that the risk of using one far outweighs any benefit.
If it does work perfectly you will not see any difference
If it doesn't work properly you may end up with an expensive doorstop.

I use Wise Registry Cleaner.
It tells you what is safe to fix and what is not.
