My friend left her date alone with her computer for a few minutes, and next thing she knew PCCillin was telling her she had viruses (and he'd cleaned out her browsing history too). This is one of the reasons he only got one date (smart girl), but her AV program was out of date and wouldn't update without her paying for a license, so she gave it to me to try fixing. I ran MBAM and it cleaned out 18 problems; here is a current HJT log. Could someone look it over and tell me if there is any further cause for concern?

I plan on installing some other AV program, most likely freeware, while I await replies.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Its not looking too bad, but let's have a deeper look:

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done two logs should open:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
---------------------------------------------------
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
Thanks.

DDS itself said to zip the attach.txt file, but since you specified just the .txt file I have sent precisely that; I hope that's okay.

WIndows Update also popped up saying she didn't have SP1 installed (this may be due to something else I forgot to mention, some seriously overzealous firewall settings that I changed to something saner). So, this machine will be occupied installing that for probably an hour or two.

Hi,

Delete this file:
c:\windows\system32\gaopdxcounter

Other than that, the log looks good. Are you having any more problems with this machine or is it running smoothly now?

Thanks.

No problems that aren't just expected consequences of the fact that it runs so much unnecessary junk on startup. But I don't need help dealing with that :-).

Thanks a lot for your trouble. It's good to know I had the situation pretty much in hand but it is always worthwhile to get a second opinion from someone formally trained in this stuff, as opposed to my random what-I've-picked-up-here-and-there knowledge of malware.
