If I try to open a word document (.doc or .docx) in Windows explorer the file usually doesn't open for several minutes. If I get impatient and try to click the file again or try to click inside the folder that contains the file Word will freeze. I then have to force Word to quit. This kills the Windows explorer, but it returns quickly. If I open Word then open the document from within Word everything functions normally. I'm running XP Pro SP3 McAfee Home the current version and updates Office 2007 with the current updates. I ran the Office diagnostics and found no problems. I have installed uninstalled, wiped registry???? Also affects Excel under same conditions but not Power Point |

Hi there
This might be caused by your AV, especially if it has an Office plug in running (Norton is notorious for this). Have a look and see if McAfee has some kind of function like this and try disabling it. |

Couldn't find one in Mcafee, I ran the repair again and it seems to work so far.
What I am wondering though, in the registry therea re still 10, 11, and 12 folders in the office section. I wonder if 10 and 11 are causing problems, which would be - to Office 2003, then compatibility viewers? |

Hi
Each version of Office is numbered by MS - Office XP (2002) is Office 10. So Office 2003 will be 11 and Office 2007 will be 12. If you don't need the older versions then you should be able to uninstall via Control Panel. However, it is possible to have as many versions installed as you like - there should not be any compatibility problems. As long as the versions are installed in order, starting with the oldest first. QUOTE in the registry there are still 10, 11, and 12 folders in the office section. I'm hoping that "registry" was not what you meant - there's absolutely no need to make any changes to your registry. |

I was talking about the registry, thinking that the mere existance of those previous editions although uninstalled, are causing the conflict. Ironically, for the 4th time, I repaired Office, stopped Firefox from opening Nitro.PDF and all appears to be fixed for the moment. Not really sure what repaired what since I had ran Office repair and uninstalls and reinstalls several times. I am starting to think that memory is an issue. I only have two 512 MB chips, I hear Office 07 can be a hog, so perhaps I had many other thing sup and running causing the slowness??? We'll see, I ordered a memory upgrade, adding 2 GB, chips are cheap now anyway.
Thanks for the help. |
