For those of you who have found an alternative browser and hate still having to open Internet Explorer to manually obtain Windows Updates, there is a solution:
  1. Right-click an open area on the desktop, point to New, and then click Shortcut.
  2. Type hcp://system/updatectr/updatecenter.htm and then click Next.
  3. Type a name for the shortcut, such as Windows Update, and then click Finish.
  4. Double-click the shortcut to start Windows Update from the Help Center.
Furthermore, in Opera you can create a bookmark with the link and it will pass the correct program call after clicking Yes in the message prompt. Sadly, Firefox doesn't follow the link as a bookmark.

Edit: It doesn't appear to work on Vista, but Vista has its own way of performing windows updates.

Regards,

Ax

Thanks Ax238 for that great information. It will certainly encourage me to use Opera from now on. One of the reasons I stayed with IE was the hassle in getting the Windows Updates.

All the best to you for 2008

Looks we've finally found a way around having to use IE for Windows Updates, no if only more online scanners would follow suit.

Off topic, I have a Hotmail address(not my main one) and whenever I try to log in to it via FireFox it just causes hassles and I don't get access, anyway around this hassle?

Okay I got the wrong impression, I thought this meant the Windows Update site could be accessed via Firefox. On the up site the speed is a bit better. I heard there's a way to use Firefox for Windows Updates but I can't remember how, does anyone know about it?

It can, use the Firefox addon IETab to load an IE page from within Firefox.

Thanks! thumbup.gif I've just installed it but haven't tried it yet. Looking at its functions it seems a little overwhelming.
I don't suppose you'd have any idea why it'd be so difficult to log into Hotmail through Firefox?
