The log files are my own, however, and I have made edit's to the text below where applicable to my situation. "Totally my fault, my error. I clicked on an ActiveX installation that I knew was untrustworthy, and upon completion, my problems began immediately. There is now a new icon in my system tray that I cannot get rid of. It is an alternating shield wich flips from being a white "X" on a red shield, to being a white "?" on a blue shield. Hovering the mouse over the icon shows nothing, even though the other icons shows the program name (such as the date and time). Every couple of minutes an alert window pops up from it saying: "System Alert! System has dected a number of active spyware applications that may impact the performance of your computer. Click the icon to get rid of unwanted spyware by downloading an up-to-date antispyware solution." If I right-click that icon, thinking to access a popup menu to disable it, what happens instead is a new browser window opens to URL http://www.virusprotectpro.com/?aff=1012 Things I have done so far: 1. I did everything in the "Before Posting A Hijackthis Log "self Help", For Windows 2000 and XP Versions" topic: - Installed and ran ATF Cleaner - Updated and Ran Spybot (it said it fixed several Zlob.VideoActiveXObject entries in various places, along with a SpyLocked.FakeAlert entry. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so! If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there. Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here. Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list... Save the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response. Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log. Once complete, please post the SmitfraudFix report, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.

First a number of uninstalls, please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs and remove these: IExplorer Security Plug-in Internet Explorer Secure Bar J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2 J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 Messenger Service The Java installs are not malware but they are outdated and are now a security risk, you can install the latest version (version 6 update 2) from here when you're machine is clean You have My Way Search Assistant installed on your system. This program is not malware, but it does report on your surfing behavior and is considered very undesirable. If you actually use this program, consider a safe alternative such as Google toolbar. I recommend you remove this program, to do so, find and remove My Way Search Assistant PartyPoker and PokerStars have been reported as being malware-related (here and here) so I strongly recommend you remove them. To do so, find PartyPoker and PokerStars on the list and select Remove You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic. To remove, find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove You have Shareaza, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but P2P file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it. I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours. To remove, find Shareaza version 2.2.1.0 on the list and remove it. You have Office Password Remover 1.0 installed, up to you if you want this program on your system but I thought you should be alerted to it. Once that's done, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following : Restart your computer After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually; Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear; Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter". Choose your usual account. Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files. You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection. The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter". The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows. Once complete, please post the new Smitfraudfix log along with another HijackThis log.

I'm very glad to hear it and you're welcome I think your machine is now clean, here are some final important steps: Re-hide hidden/system files and folders: Click Start -> My Computer Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Do not show hidden files and folders CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option Press OK Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems: Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close Now remove old, infected System Restore points: Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe.
