first off, let me thank whomever reads this post, and helps me. I'm so very grateful for the assistance. I have posed my HT log below in hopes that I can remove whatever is ailing my computer. for about the past two months, I've been unable to view video files of any kind on my computer. I get a message that Window Explorer needs to shut down, and then that my video viewer (WMP, Real PLayer, etc) Needs to shut down...no explanation at all. Once, I was able to watch a movie while I minimized the closure warning, but other than the one time, all the videos simply stop in the beginning. Often, just opening a folder with a video file causes Windows Explorer to crash. I use NIV, and I've downloaded all the updates and scanned for viruses to no avail. Adaware and Spybot both found cookies only. jcompwiz,
Welcome to the forum, so sorry about the delay but we have just been swamped here at TC. I need you to move HJT to its own folder, instructions here. DO THIS FIRST Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder. We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes, If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost. Easy to fix, * just go to MY COMPUTER > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it HIJACKTHIS . * Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT . * Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE . * Now HJT should reside in C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE Its been awhile since you posted your log and your system may have changed so run HJT and post a new log please. |

jcompwiz,
You just posted and outdated version of HJT 1.97, you need to go into that folder and delete it. Your originall post was the most current version 1.99.1, please move the current version to the correct folder and post another log please. You should have HJT 1.99.1 in C:\Hijack This\ Ken |

Good Morning jcompwiz,
Your log is looking better but we still need to do a few things, I would like you to run a couple of online virus scanners, have them set to Fix or Auto Clean. Be sure to save the reports of what was found to a folder that you can find. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/ After running the scanners, reboot back into Safemode, Open HJT Scan Only, close all windows except HJT and put a checkmark in this entry and click on FIX CHECKED. * O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vmlib] vmlib.exe Look for and delete this entry if found, the scanners may have picked it up already. It may be here C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vmlib.exe If not go to START/ SEARCH/ C: and run a search and if it is found, delete it. Please post a new HJT log along with any reports from the scanners. |

Good Morning Janeen,
Your Panda scan shows some sign that you may still have all or part of a VX2 infection. You have Ad-Aware installed, open the program and go to Help/ About and make sure that it is AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06 If it is an older version, you can download the current version via the links in my signature. No need to uninstall the old version, it will be uninstalled for you upon installing the current version. * Start Ad-Aware * check for updates * close the program, don't run it yet. Now download and install the Ad-Aware Vx2 plug in, Vx2 Cleaner Before running the VX2 Cleaner, make sure other anti-virus or anti-spyware applications are closed. * Now open Ad-Aware, click on ADD-ONS, click on the Vx2 Cleaner, Click on Run Tool * If you computer is infected with VX2, a dialog box with text such as “New VX2 variant found” or “VX2 variant 1 found” will appear. * Press "Clean" and a dialog box with text “The first phase completed. Please reboot and perform a Smart Scan" will appear. After saving your work, reboot your system manually run Ad-Aware and run a Smart Scan. * Repeat running the Vx2 Cleaner and Smart Scan until the VX2 Cleaner reports "System clean". Press "Close” to exit. Run Ad-Aware one more time and scan your computer to make sure VX2 has been found and removed. Then do this to clean out all your Internet Temporary files This process will clean out your TEMP FILES and your TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES. Please do both steps: Step 1 - DELETE TEMP FILES * This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results. * click on START/ RUN and type %temp% and press the ok button. This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. You should do this for each user on your system. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. * Do this same process for %windir%\temp. NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY Step 2 - DELETE TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES * Now I want you to open up INTERNET EXPLORER * Click on the TOOLS MENU * Then INTERNET OPTIONS * At the GENERAL TAB, (which should be the first tab you are currently on), * click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT. * Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted. When done Run Panda again and post a new HJT log along with the results of the Panda scan. This post has been edited by ken545: Oct 14 2005, 07:23 AM |

Good Morning Janeen,
QUOTE I forgot to mention Ken that I didn't find any incidence of VX2. The ad-aware cleaner never found anything. Thats great, the other scans got rid of it, this was just a precaution Run HJT Scan Only and fix this line with your browser and any windows closed. O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk.disabled New reboot back into Safemode and have windows enabled to show all files and folders, look for this one and delete it if found. C:\windows\system32\bks.dll To delete this file you may have to right click on it then click properties and change attributes from read only then right click on file and delete Lets download and run CCleaner It is a safe program to use, it will clean out all your temp files and such, just start the program and click on Run Cleaner, when you run the Issues Scan and it asks you to back up your registry...Say Yes Now go to C:\windows\prefetch and delete all the contents of that folder...but not the prefetch folder itself Post a new log please and if all looks ok, I have a bunch of tips and free programs for you to install to help keep your system more secure. |

Dear Ken,
Oh Dear...I think I've gotten myself into some trouble. I seem to have a new problem. Here is both my HIT and a new Panda Scan for your reference. Hi Janeen,
Lets do this... Disable System Restore. * On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. * Click Properties. * Click the System Restore tab. * Check Turn off System Restore. * Click Apply, and then click OK. When your done with this fix you need to go into Control Panel/ System Restore/ System Restore Setting and re enable System Restore and then set a new restore point, name it anything that you can remember. Please download Ewido Security Suite Evaluation Version it is a free version of the program. * Install ewido security suite * When installing the program, under "Additonal Options" uncheck.. * Install background guard * Install scan via context menu * Launch ewido, there should now be an icon on your desktop, double-click it. * The program will now open to the main screen. * You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files: * On the left hand side of the main screen click update. * Then click on Start Update. * The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful") Once the updates are installed, close out the program. Reboot back into Safemode and be sure that you still have window enabled to show all files and folder. To Enter SAFEMODE * Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART * As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu. * Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE * Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS * Click on MY COMPUTER * Then on your C: Drive * Then to TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS/ VIEW * Choose the radio button to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS * Take the checkmark out of HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES * Then APPLY/ OK * Don't forget to reverse this once your computer is clean Run HJT Scan Only and remove the following entries. R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll O2 - BHO: TalMgr Class - {70230839-555C-4862-8D42-BB1E2352502C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\italyzqt.dll (file missing) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs302972949.dll Now open up Ewido and scan your system 1. Click on scanner. 2. Click on Complete System Scan, the scan will now begin. 3. While the scan is in progress you will be promted to clean files, click OK. 4. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections", then choose clean and click OK. 5. Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located at the bottom of the screen named Save Report. 6. Click Save Report. 7. Now save the report .txt file to your desktop. Now look for and delete the following files and folders if present. C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick C:\WINDOWS\system32\italyzqt.dll Do a search for this one, not sure where it could be. repairs302972949.dll While stlll in Safemode, This process will clean out your TEMP FILES and your TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES. Now go to C:\windows\prefetch and delete everything in that folder..But not the prefetch folder itself. Now download and run CCleaner Run the program to clean up your system, when you run the Issues Scan and it asks you if you want to back up the Registry...Say Yes When done, post a new HJT log and also the results of the Ewido scan. |
