I have a Canon multifunction printer MP760. To scan documents, one has to open Navigator 1.1. When I attempt this, the computer responds with the message that mpn.exe is missing. Various websites indicate that McAfee (which I have) may have removed it thinking it was malware. How do I get it back so I can launch my scanner? I have used file search, but still nothing comes up? Does McAfee have it quarantined somewhere? If so, how do I get it back where it belongs?

I have the software CDs that came with the printer, but they take over an hour to install. Is there a way to find this particular file on the CD and transfer it to the appropriate place on the hard drive?

Hi and welcome to the WTT forums

Sorry to hear of the problem with your machine and in particular with the scanner/printer software.

Unfortunately it's not possible to determine if the file mpn.exe that is missing on your machine is "good" or a "bad guy" (without detailed investigations)

The bad guys will often cloak a piece of malicious code with the name of a known good file in order to throw the anti malware tools off the scent!

There is a lot of malicious code around that has the filename mpn.exe and I strongly recommend that you do not attempt to undo what McAffee has done for you or try to find a copy of it anywhere and manually insert it.

I would not recommend you trying to copy mpn.exe or any other single file from the installation disc.

An hours work to uninstall the software, close down your machine, wait 30 seconds with a blank black screen, restart it and then reinstall the software is a small price to pay for not taking the risks of infecting your machine........Maybe , having installed it once before, it may be a bit quicker this time....
Good luck
Regards
