Every time I boot my computer, I get a constantly reloading box that just says "Load!" I have no idea what application this is and the boxes just keep popping up one on top of another until I shut it down with the Task Manager (which also just says "Load!") This does not occur when I resume after hibernation, only when I restart my computer. Any idea what this can be? The laptop is a new (purchased in April) Dell Studio 17 and it has Windows Vista 64.

Thank you!
Casi

There is obviously something trying to start then, it may be an infection, but it could be something else as well so don't panic, but when you use Task Manager to close them what description\name does it give to the process ?
Next BEFORE closing them, click on the Processes tab, now notice the column marked CPU, it gives %'age's of each running process, click on the bit where it says CPU twice, not fast, just click once, pause, click again and it brings up the processes in the highest running order, this order will change as they battle for control of getting the most power, this can often make it difficult to follow, in which case click on the name column and they will go alphabetically and stop jumping around, but you will need to scroll through the list to see it all probably, but the hope is whatever it is causing this, will be at the top taking the most power, probably upward of 50%.

If you can report back with that info we can hopefully get an idea whats happening and be able to give you the best advice, also when replying with that info if you can mention if you've run any scans for nasties etc, then we can move forward.

Ok, I restarted the computer and even took some screen shots so you can get an idea of what's going on. The Task Manager just says Load! I looked at the highest running unfamiliar process and it was something called dwn.exe. Not sure what that is but at times it went as high as 25%. I have attached some screenshots. Let me know if this helps. Incidentally, I have McAfee which runs regularly but I believe this error came up after an automatic Windows Update. The PC had to reboot and when it did, that's when the error occurred.

Please let me know if this helps.
Thanks,
Casi

Hi Casi

Some info on dwm.exe; http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...-is-it-running/

Have you tried boot vista into safemode and see if the error occurs there?

How to boot into safemode:

After first BIOS / Logo screen and/or first beep
Keep tapping F8 at short intervals
A black Dos-like screen will load if caught right
Choose safemode without network

Regards

Also, you can use codestuff Starter to identify what programs are loading at startup. Here's how:

How to use CodeStuff Starter to view startup items:

  • Please download and install CodeStuff Starter
  • Run Starter by finding it on your start menu after it is installed.
  • When the program opens, you will see three tabs on the main screen (Startup, Processes, Services)
  • Please click the Startup tab and make sure that All Sections is selected on the left hand side under the sections view pane.
  • Once the Startup tab and all sections is selected, please click the File menu and choose Save as HTML.
  • Please save the file to your desktop and call it startup.html.
  • Locate the startup.html file on your desktop. Attach the file to the forum.

This should give us better insight into what this program is.

Thank you so much! I will try this as soon as I get home. I can see that dwm.exe is probably not the issue but I have a feeling we will get to the bottom of it!

Thanks so much!

Hi Appleoddity,
Here's the startup file. I hope it helps us diagnose the problem.

Thanks,
Casi

I noticed the CorelIOMonitor.exe file which comes up as an error whenever I sync my ipod. I can just cut it off but it's annoying and I had no idea what it was. Now I see that it's attached to PaintShop Pro. Is there a way to disable that or remove it from the startup file as well?

Hi Casi.. The startup list really doesn't reveal what is causing the Load! problem. It must be related to some other piece of software that is loading on startup.

To find out, open Starter again and uncheck all the entries in the startup list and choose to disable them. Reboot your computer and see if the problem stops. If it does, open Starter back up and re-enable those entries a few at a time, rebooting between each try, until you find the culprit.

Skip the mcagent_exe entry because that is your anti-virus. Hopefully that isn't whats causing your problem.

I tried but I've ecountered yet another problem. The application won't let me disable anything and I am the administrator (and only user) for this computer. I have attached a screenshot of the error.

Also, I ran an full McAfee scan and rebooted in SafeMode. The error does not occur in Safe Mode but it did occur again when I logged on normally.

Right-click Starter, click Run As Administrator. Try again.

Yay!! We figured it out! It's the QuickTime Task that is causing the error. I have turned it off (as well as the CorelIOMonitor that I was having issues with) and all is well.

Thank you all so much for your time, patience and great suggestions!

Happy Independence Day!

Bad news... it's still happening. I tried taking other items out of the Startup but it still happens when I re-boot. It's getting to be really frustrating. Any other ideas?

Thanks so much!

Casi, you were pretty certain the problem was resolved two weeks ago. You need to be a litlte more clear about when the problem started re-occuring and what might have happened around that time?

Itunes just released a new version. Quicktime installs with Itunes. Did you upgrade your Itunes? That would've reset the changes you made when you disabled quicktime originally and "solved" the problem.

Well, the problem seemed to be resolved as I logged in that day and did not get the error. However, the next time I re-booted my computer (I usually hibernate) the Load! error occured again, just a few days later. I tried troubleshooting myself and even searched the internet for someone having a similar problem but I haven't found a solution.

I did upgrade iTunes last night and when I re-booted, the error occurred again. How can I find out if there is anything on a Vista 64 PC that had the command Load!? I can't figure out what application this is connected to and it is beginning to drive me crazy! LOL!

Thanks again.
