Hello! biggrin.gif
I have some questions.

1. I was in Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing.. When I clicked on the link for IE/Spyad, I found this:
QUOTE
Please Note: the original IE-SPYAD format that used .REG files to load and unload the Restricted Sites list is no longer available and will not be maintained. The same holds true for IE-SPYAD2. Both are replaced by what used to be called IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut. ZonedOut is a free utility that loads and unloads a plain text list of domains into the Restricted sites zone. You can think of ZonedOut as an improved replacement for the .BAT file utility used in the "original" IE-SPYAD. This new version of IE-SPYAD provides the same protection as the old version, but is easier to use and maintain.

I figure that it's safe to go ahead and download ZonedOut, but want to check just to make sure.

2. What is a toolbar notifier? My little WinPatrol scottie doggie was barking about a google toolbar notifier.

3. I have Symantec Endpoint Protection. I think it includes a firewall. I can't find it. How do I find the firewall? I was trying to get updates for Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and got this message:
QUOTE
Error: Update failed. Make sure you are connected to the Internet and your firewall is set to allow Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to access the internet.

I can now update mbam. lookaround.gif I don't know why, though!

4. When I click on to the Live Chat on WWT, I get a security warning. I've included an image. It says that the java's digital signature has an error, an expired certificate. Should I ignore the warning and just run it?

5. Are there instructions for utilizing WWT's Live Chat?

Hi Kathy,

Seems like you have been saving up your questions wink.gif

Yes, that is also what I understand from it. It slightyly seems like there is a newer version of IE-SPYAD that has this ZonedOut built in, but then there is nothing more mentioned about that. I recommend that you download ZonedOut:
http://www.funkytoad.com/index.php?option=...5&Itemid=33

It is part of the Google Toolbar.

QUOTE
3. I have Symantec Endpoint Protection. I think it includes a firewall. I can't find it. How do I find the firewall?

It does have a firewall:
http://www.symantec.com/business/endpoint-protection
"Seamlessly integrates essential technologies such as antivirus, antispyware, firewall, intrusion prevention, device and application control."
It must be working automatically and I guess you can find it somewhere in the Endpoint Protection window.

Probably just a little problem on their side wink.gif If it happens more frequently just let me know.

QUOTE
4. When I click on to the Live Chat on WWT, I get a security warning. I've included an image. It says that the java's digital signature has an error, an expired certificate. Should I ignore the warning and just run it?

You can ignore it and just run it. Why that error occurs I do not know and I have asked the administrator.

QUOTE
5. Are there instructions for utilizing WWT's Live Chat?

It is as easy as allowing the Java prompt. You will automatically join the WWT channel and on the right-hand bottom you can change your nickname to whatever you like. The chat is not really active though.

Please let me know if you understand all and ask anymore questions you have.

Regards,
John.

Hello, John!
It's nice to meet you! Thank you for answering my questions! biggrin.gif

I have been!! I have a great store of questions! Where to post them is the problem. I thought it was funny to see others writing,"I hope I am in the right place." It's what I would have said. Sometimes it's hard to figure out the correct area in which to post. blush.gif

QUOTE

I've been following links in circles looking for the lists to download for Zoned out. I am thinking that Zoned out stores lists of danger zones and then warns you away from them when surfing. Am I misunderstanding the function of this program?huh.gif

QUOTE

I searched the Symantec Endpoint Protection window and its help & support area but couldn't find a separate area for the firewall. I guess they integrated the firewall super seamlessly!! I was concerned because of the error message from mbam when trying to update, but of course since it is not currently a problem, I will follow tallin's previous advice on another matter and leave it alone since it's working! thumbup.gif

When I scroll over my name, it says,"Java User", that is the nickname, correct? Is that what others see? I tried to change my nickname. I typed in the box and pressed "enter", but nothing happened. I don't understand the purpose of the arrows which say "#WhatTheTech" and "Status." Do you open a private chat by clicking on some one's name? Does the @ sign mean that that person is "away"? If they are "away" then why are they still in the window? laugh.gif
I don't regularly chat on-line, as you can see, but I really like the people here and would like to chat sometime. This is a "feel-good place!"

Hi,

QUOTE

I have been re-reading the whole IE-SPYAD webpage and found out what is actually happening. The IE-SPYAD is just a list of bad websites, etc. that needs to be loaded. To load this list you can best use ZonedOut:
http://www.funkytoad.com/index.php?option=...5&Itemid=33

Then after downloading and installing ZonedOut you can go here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm#IESPYAD_ZO
There is a special section called Installation & Use which you can read.

The download link to IE-SPYAD is under Download.

What IE-SPYAD does is described on its webpage:
"IE-SPYAD adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. Once you merge this list of sites and domains into the Registry, the web sites for these companies will not be able to use cookies, ActiveX controls, Java applets, or scripting to compromise your privacy or your PC while you surf the Net. Nor will they be able to use your browser to push unwanted pop-ups, cookies, or auto-installing programs on your PC."

QUOTE
I searched the Symantec Endpoint Protection window and its help & support area but couldn't find a separate area for the firewall. I guess they integrated the firewall super seamlessly!!

It is! I have been searching for pictures of Symantec Endpoint Protection and I have never found a screen where something about the firewall is said. The only one that I found is this one:

Maybe you can get there when you click Client Management here:

QUOTE
When I scroll over my name, it says,"Java User", that is the nickname, correct?

No, it is not. One of the ones on the list on the right is you. When you hover over the list on the right one should say 'Java User' and that is you.

QUOTE
I tried to change my nickname. I typed in the box and pressed "enter", but nothing happened.

Just tried it and it worked well. I even checked to see if I could change it to 'Kathy' and it worked. If it does not work, try using this:
CODE
/nick Kathy

QUOTE
I don't understand the purpose of the arrows which say "#WhatTheTech" and "Status."

Well, there are multiple channels on this server so you can also go to #computerhelp or #bleepingcomputer which are others that use this type of chat. You do this by typing this:
CODE
/join #bleepingcomputer

The channels will open in the 'Public' row as they ARE public. Things like private chats and your status, which contains valuable information for some, are private wink.gif

QUOTE
Do you open a private chat by clicking on some one's name?

Yes.

QUOTE
Does the @ sign mean that that person is "away"?

No, it means that they are an operator/administrator/moderator of the channel.

QUOTE
If they are "away" then why are they still in the window?

This chat does not only work through the link at the bottom of WhatTheTech, but there are also standalone programs that use the IRC method. IRC is a very, very big thing with a lot of different servers with on them a lot of channels. Some people just have their program open the whole day, logged in to multiple servers with multiple channels open, so when they come back they can read what has happened and do not have to start the program every time.

QUOTE
I don't regularly chat on-line, as you can see

Well, IRC is not very regular for overall chat. As you can see it uses a lot of different switches (/join, /nick) and it does not look really nice. Still, it is very basic, which is what we want, and once you know it, it is easy..

Regards,
John.

Hello, John! banana2.gif

The download link to IE-SPYAD is under Download.

I followed that link to these downloads :

and downloaded the first one. Is the second a different format but the same download?

Then I got a little window
Attached Image

which said that 7 files were unzipped.
I hit the Current Zone dropped down menu,

changed that to Restricted Zone and imported 3 files:
ie-ads.txt
ie-nfe.txt
adult.txt
to ZonedOut. I only saw these six files:
adult-note.txt
LICENSE.TXT
ReadMe.txt
ie-ads.txt
ie-nfe.txt
adult.txt
and the adult folder. Is the folder the seventh file? Did I do right in importing just those 3 files?

This is my Change Settings screen in my Symantec Endpoint Protection.

I followed all the links and couldn't find the Firewall Rules anywhere. Thank you for looking for it, though! Maybe in a better edition I'd have more access!

I was able to change my nickname, thank you very much! I appreciate the time and answers you've been giving to me!

Hi Kathy,

The only one you have to add is ie-add.txt. That is the one which contains the list of bad things.

It is a pity you cannot find the firewall section. You could of course contact Symantec about it.

Any more questions or problems?

Regards,
John.

Hello, John!
A window popped up:
Attached Image

So, should I disable one of these programs and if so, which, Symantec or Windows? ohmy.gif

(I'm sorry I did not reply sooner. One of my friends whisked me off on a mini-vacation. I haven't even been out in a long time, so this just blew me away!!! woot.gif Her mother sent us to a spa resort with a wave pool and a hot tub!)

Hello, again, John! adios.gif
headscratch.gif I was thinking...I had everything transferred onto a (new to me) used pc ([Resolved] Rebooting after startup). Since then, I've had a little bit of strangeness, things which are difficult to describe, like pages not loading correctly... I wonder if these were an indication of the two av's conflicting?

Hi Kathy,

QUOTE

The firewall option should be off at the security center. The others are not bad as the 'Virus Protection' only watches if you have anti-virus installed (and you do: Norton).

Hello, John! blush.gif
Where should I post this issue of my pages not loading correctly? I'm thinking that it is not malware but rather the result of one of the steps I've followed these past weeks to protect my pc. This is how my start page appeared today:
Attached Image

and how it would have appeared usually:
Attached Image

I got this image by going onto another pc and to my start page.
Do I post here with you?
wacko.gif I hope you're not getting sick of me!
wavey.gif Kathy
Also I've been getting a warning at startup that Symantec is off.

Hi Kathy,

Have you got multiple browsers installed (for example Internet Explorer AND FireFox)? If so, try loading the same website with another browser and see if it works.

QUOTE

I suggest that you start a new topic about that problem here:

Sure not, why would I do this if people would not ask questions or I would not like to answer them wink.gif

Also I've been getting a warning at startup that Symantec is off.

Please let me know, here, what it exactly says.

Hi Kathy,

QUOTE

Then I also do not think so. A second web browser is something you install for a special reason, so if you must ask how to find it you probably do not have it wink.gif

What is critical here is to know whether your AV is really turned off or not. I know that Security Center sometimes goes crazy, so only disable the alerts if you are sure Symantec is running and activated. Alerts can be disabled like this:
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Choose Security Center
  • Now on the left, choose Change the way Security Center alerts me
  • There you can uncheck/check options that you do not or do want to be alerted about

When that warning balloon appears:

The (gold) Symantec shield doesn't have the Attached Image ban sign on it.
I disabled Symantec briefly to show you how the disabled Symantec shield appears:

So I am thinking that the Symantec really is on. Do you think so, too?
