When I use the Google search engine, I get results for my search but when I click the link it redirects me to other sites and usually pops up a lot of ads. I have also been redirected to other sites after entering an address into my browser. Internet is extremely slow and even freezes up at times when loading web pages. I also get a message in the tray at the bottom right of my screen saying "system update" or "system message." When I click it, it takes me to a site to download an ad-ware removal program. I ignored this page.

I ran Spybot and Ad-Aware, which fixed a bunch of stuff - but these problems persist.

We'll see if a little something else has more luck. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here and save it to your Desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• Ensure a checkmark is placed next to both Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version - you'll need to clear it with your firewall.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan and then Scan.
• When the scan has finished, click OK and then Show Results to view the results - no surprise there!
• If MBAM finds anything, check the box(es) and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

Let me have the MBAM log, a fresh HJT log (run in Normal Mode) AND a description of how your PC is behaving.

It appears that this latest fix has solved the Google Search problem. There were two items that had to uninstall on the reboot. When I attempted to reboot, a blue warning screen appeared and told me that there was a system error and to restart. I restarted and there have been no additional issues. The logs for both MBAM and HJT are posted below. Are there any more steps I should follow?

Let me have the log produced, as before, as well as a fresh HJT log and a description of how the PC is behaving.

My computer appears to be performing normally, though it looks like Combofix failed to delete two of the three nasty files. But the Google search engine is now running normally.

Download UnDLL by ESET from here and save it to your Desktop.
You will then need to extract the file(s):
Right click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All...
In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish
Double click UNDLL.EXE to begin:

• Click Select infected DLL.
• Copy and paste the following filename into the Filename: textbox and click Open -
  
  C:\WINDOWS\system32\consoleh.dll
  
  
• If the tool will allow you, repeat for the following filename:
  
  C:\WINDOWS\system32\cryptdlgu.dll
  
  
• I've never used the tool on more than one file at a time, so if it doesn't allow you to do both together, run the tool a second time after the PC has rebooted, if a reboot is required.
• Allow the tool to delete the file - a reboot may be necessary.

There will be a textfile in the undll folder - If you have to run the tool twice, remove the first copy before you run it again, or it may overwrite it. Let me have a copy of one or both files and a fresh HJT log.

It looks like unDLL deleted the files. But the HJT log still shows them:

Am I right in assuming that there isn't an option to delete more than one file at a time with Undll?

Yes. UnDLL will only handle one file at once -- then you have to reboot after each.

The latest fix seemed to eliminate those nasty files. The logs are below. Let me know if there's anything else that looks like it needs work. If not, thank you for your help. Things seem to be running normally on my PC.

You are running an old version of Sun Java which needs updating:

• Go here and click on the Download button to the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u5.
• Accept the license agreement by clicking the appropriate radio button and then continue.
• Under Windows Platform - Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 5, click the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language link.
• Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any entries that refer to Java 2 Runtime Environment and then reboot your PC.
• Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
• Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.

Your copy of Adobe Reader is out of date - you can get the latest, and free, version here. If you don't want the media player as well, just uncheck the box.

I want you to run your PC as normal for a few days and when you are happy that everything is fine, do the following:

Go to Start > Run, enter the following into the textbox and click OK: combofix /u
This will uninstall Combofix and do a little housework besides.

Create a new Restore Point - this will give a clean one should you need it in the future.
A tutorial for System Restore is available here.

The reason for waiting is that if removing the malware has caused a problem, which it occasionally does, you can put your PC back to how it was before the fix. This will re-install the malware, but an infected PC is better than an expensive paperweight!

Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet.

I think that's the lot.

My computer seems to be running normally -- so I took the additional steps and uninstalled combofix and updated my Java and Acrobat applications. I also created a new restore point.
