Recently my comp (running Windows XP) had an infection from Vundofix but I was able to get rid of it using SpybotS&D and Norton. However, after I got rid of the Vundo infection I started receiving random Popups that aren't related to Vundo wares. The sites are random but the cookies all trace back to url.adtrgt.com with a typical one looking like this: hxxp://url.adtrgt.com/cpv.jsp?p=112088&
So, I'm wondering if this problem can be fixed and if so, should I go ahead and post a highjackthis! logfile? Thanks for the help. Edit: Deactivated link This post has been edited by Trevuren: Jul 29 2008, 07:32 PM |

Hi ironprominent, and Welcome to WhatTheTech
My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
QUOTE had an infection from Vundofix but I was able to get rid of it Unfortunately, you didn't get it all. A. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop. Note: If you already have ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version. B. Now we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools: MCAFEE ANTIVIRUS Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a sign.
C.Go to -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall
Notes: 1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall. 2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions. 3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser. 4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper. 5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine. |

ironprominent,
I just found out that the Combofix tool was pulled from access an hour ago. You won't be able to download it. So please revise previous instructions as follows: Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Download - ATF Cleaner Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program. Under Main choose: Select All Click the Empty Selected button. (If you use FireFox or the Opera browser To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.) It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two. Then Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
Next Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.

Tomk,
I was able to download the Combofix tool, not entirely sure why- and I don't remember when I actually got the program, but I was. And I've already gone ahead with running the program and getting a log from it. Should I post that and the HJT log or should I continue with your last instructions to download ATF Cleaner, MalwareBytes and DSS? This post has been edited by ironprominent: Aug 4 2008, 08:18 AM |

ironprominent,
ComboFix is back online. You did fine. Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer. If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update. Updating Java:
Now to Clean out the Java cache: Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE. Disable your protection programs as we did before.
Next COMBOFIX-Script
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall. Then Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
In your next reply please provide:

When I try to download the new version of Java onto my computer a pop-up comes up from java that says security warning and then it says that it failed to verify the certificate because there was an error parsing the certificate. No assertions can be made of the origin or validity of the code. Installing and running this code is not allowed.
The name of the java file I downloaded is 1218065981725-integrated not jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe. Could that be the problem? |
