Hi There,

My flatmate had a virus recently and told me how helpful this forum was!! Now my compuer is infected (different virus). Basically, everytime I turn on my computer I'm greeted with a sign from "Windows Security Alert" saying that "Wondows firewall has blocked some features of this program". I'm told the virus is called Trojan-spy.Win32. Banker.aiw, has a risk level of High and is likely to steal information from users of a range of online payment systems. There is also a link to buy some 'handy' spyware removal software.

I've been told that this virus isn't as serious as it makes itself out to be and is just trying to get me to buy the software from the link. Not sure if this is true, but the pop-ups are irritating and slowing my computer and causing it to crash. Have since down a clean up of useless junk and gotten rid of P2P programs like Limewire. An AVG scan and Malwarebyte anti-malware scan don't show the virus so can someone please help me out!!!

Many thanks!!

Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech smile.gif

My name is jpshortstuff. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
---------------------------------------------------
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.

Please download HijackThis version 2.0.2 and save the file to your desktop. Double click the Hijackthis icon on your desktop and hit Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile and then copy and paste the log into a new reply, using the Add Reply button.

Thanks.

Hi.

I notice you have both AVG and Norton on your system. By the looks of things, AVG is active, and you aren't using Norton any more. If this is the case, then you can completely remove Norton with the following steps:
  • Click Start >> Control Panel >> Uninstall Programs
  • Find the following items and click Remove/Uninstall by each one:

    LiveUpdate 3.2 (Symantec Corporation)
    LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec Corporation)
    NIS2007
    Norton 360

  • Norton Removal Tool
    • Download the Norton Removal Tool and save it to your Desktop.
    • Close and applications and browsers that you may have open.
    • Double-click the Norton Removal Tool on your Desktop.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions, and reboot if and when necessary.
You should also uninstall the following items:
Dcads Advanced Toolbar
Viewpoint Media Player
Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ 6 Update 5

Open HijackThis. Hit Do A System Scan Only. Place a check next to the following items (if present):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: Dcads Toolbar - {41C29B07-6F91-4966-91BE-2E2841643C83} - C:\Program Files\Dcads Advanced Toolbar\toolbar.dll

Close all browsers and windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

At this point, please reboot your computer.

Please right click Internet Explorer on your desktop and then select "Run As Administrator". Next, go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

NOTE: Internet Explorer will temporarily have administrator privileges, this is required for the scan but dangerous for normal surfing so do NOT open any other websites in IE until after the scan has finished and this window has been closed.
  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Also, please give a detailed description of how your computer is running and behaving at the moment, listing any remaining problems.

Thanks.

Hi there,

My apologies for not replying sooner but it's taken awhile to do all those things. This is because my computer seems to crash whenever i try to run or install programs. In particular, when windows asks for permission to run a program. I click accept but after a few seconds the screen goes black and doesn'tgo back. So have to switch off my laptop each time this happens.

I have removed some of those programs you mentioned but couldn't get rid of the Java updates. Norton should be removed but had to run the Norton removal program in safe mode with networking. I was able to remove those programs in Hijackthis, which was able to run in normal mode.

Similarly, I had to run the Kapersky scan in safe mode with networking as whenever I tried to access internet explorer as administrator I would be asked to give permission to run it. I would accept but as i mentioned this seems to make my computer crash.

The Kapersky scan didn't pick up any virus and when I went to look at the results the box was blank.....it was definitely run in administrator mode of internet explorer but not sure whether running it in safe mode makes it void.

Hope this helps and thanks again.

Hi smile.gif

I'm not an expert at troubleshooting tech problems for Vista, so let's make sure your computer is clean and then I will refer you to the Tech area of this forum to get some help with that issue.

Please start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (with Admin privileges, in safe mode if necessary), update it, and fun a full system scan, posting the log back here.

GMER
  • Download GMER by GMER from here
  • Unzip it to a folder on your desktop
  • Right-click on gmer.exe and select Run As Administrator... (again, safe mode if necessary will be fine) to launch GMER
  • If asked, allow the gmer.sys driver load
  • If it warns you about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan, click OK
  • If you don't get a warning then
    • Click the rootkit tab
    • Click Scan
  • Once the scan has finished, click copy
  • Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
  • Save it to your desktop as gmerrk.txt
  • Click on the >>> tab
  • This will open up the rest of the tabs for you
  • Click on the Autostart tab
  • Click on Scan
  • Once the scan has finished, click copy
  • Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
  • Save it to your desktop as gmerautos.txt
  • Copy and paste the contents of gmerautos.txt and gmerrk.txt as a reply to this topic

Please also post a new HijackThis log.

Other than the computer crashing, are you experiencing any other problems?

Thanks.

Hi JP,

Really appreciate all your help. Apart from the crashes I usually get a message saying that there's an error with the CLA (command line application) and needs to be closed down. I'm not too sure what that's about. But my computer doesn't seem to be running any slower and I can access the internet ok. Here are the logs that you requested. smile.gif

Hi.

Log looks good thumbup.gif

You can now delete any other tools I had you download and use, unless you wish to keep them.

As far as I can see, all your malware problems are gone. Luckily, this is not the end of our expertise here at WhatTheTech. We have Tech helpers working in other areas of this site that will be more than happy to assist with the other problems that you are experiencing.
So, I recommend you start a new topic in the following forum:
Microsoft Windows

Describe what problems you are having, and include a link to this topic so they can see what has already been done.

The response time over there is usually very good, and you should be receiving expert help from one of our advisers shortly.

Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows Vista
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select Folder and Search Options
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Hide hidden files and folders.
  • Check Hide file extensions for known file types
  • Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Now that your system appears to be clean, there's just a few steps I'd like you to take to prevent any future infections.
  • System restore:
We will now clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
    • Click on the Start button to open your Start Menu.
    • Click on the Control Panel menu option.
    • Click on the System and Maintenance menu option.
    • Click on the System menu option.
    • Click on System Protection in the left-hand task list.
    • Create the manual restore point you should click on the Create button. When you press this button a prompt will appear asking you to provide a title for this manual restore point.
    • Type in a title for the manual restore point and press the Create button.
    • Close the System window after you have been advised that the procedure has been successfully completed.

    • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
    • Select the More options tab
    • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Make sure you do this now, as your System Restore currently has infected files in it.

  • Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install all critical updates on a regular basis.

  • You don't appear to be running any third party Firewall software.

Install a firewall! Without a firewall you are very susceptible to being hacked, and people could gain access to your computer. If you don't have a firewall I strongly recommend you download ONE of the following:
    1) Comodo
    2) Agnitum
    3) Sunbelt/Kerio

  • Make sure you update your Anti-Virus software regularly, new viruses are being developed all the time.

  • Some more programs that it would be useful to have [OPTIONAL but RECOMMENDED]:

Download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 from here
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

SpywareBlaster is another real-time scanner that prevents most spyware from even being installed.
    Freely available: Download SpywareBlaster

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein: So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Glad we could be of assistance.

Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.

Stay Clean!

Hi JP,

Thanks for all your help. I dowloaded all those other anti-spyware stuff as well. I'm still getting the trojan virus everythime I start up plus my comp still crashes but you reckon that its a problem with windows vista rather than malware virus?? I haven't been able to download the latest updates for windows as my comp crashes before they can install so perhaps I need to do that before I can get completely clean. I will try that forum that you mentioned for help with vista.

Thanks again!! thumbup.gif

Hang on, I didn't know you were still getting Virus warnings, I thought the only issue remaining was the crashing.

What is telling you that you have this trojan, is it AVG?

Hi.

Yes, it would appear that you are still infected. Apologies for mis-understanding.

Let's bring in another tool, this one hits harder.

Download ComboFix by sUBs from here or here

Note: If you already have a copy of ComboFix on your system it is essential that you delete it before downloading this copy.

**Save it to your desktop**

We need to disable one or more of your security programs so that they do not interfere with ComboFix.

Please open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component (looks like this: ) -> deselect the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.
When you need to enable the AVG Resident Shield, ( I'll let you know when) just open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component -> select the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. If you are prompted to install the Recovery Console I recommend you go ahead and hit yes.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log

Notes:
  1. Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
  3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you - please let me know.
  4. ComboFix disconnects your machine from the internet when it runs. This connection should be automatically restored when ComboFix completes its run. If ComboFix runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Thanks.

Hi JP,

Here is the data from both tests.

I've also disabled User Account Control. This has stopped my computer crashing as often.
