I have a Raedon 9250 card, yes I realise it's very old and I plan on updating it very soon. Anyway I realise it's a DirectX 8 card rather than 9 but I thought it supported Direct3D in general but upon looking at the DirectX Diagnostic Tool it says it doesn't. The driver version is one of the latest they released for it, sometime in 2006. So basically does it support Direct3D at all and if so why is DirectX not realizing it does?

Hey Enigma,

To get this topic started, have a look here, where ATI describes this card's 3D functionality.

Depending on your machine use (gaming or not), I sure wouldn't worry much about the age of your graphics card as long as you are still getting the display that you desire.

Your card was built contemporary with the advent of DirectX 8.1, so that's what it claims.
DirectX 9.0c is backwards compatible and is recommended. Available, here.

As to why your DirectX 8.1 diagnostics doesn't indicate 3D rendering capability, I don't know.
Generally, the basic "inventory" type scans don't tell the user much about advanced rendering.
There are I believe, more advanced graphics diagnostic utilities (more often discussed on dedicated hardware/over-clockers/gaming forums) that can rate your card's 3D capabilities.
If you used such a "more advanced" diagnostic, that card would probably not appear to perform well because the rating scale will include the upscale graphics cards that can cost a few hundreds of dollars each.
Again, (for myself) I wouldn't worry about it as long as I am getting a good display image for my own purposes.

Hopefully a more informed Member will have better specifics for you.
I'll be reading right along with you, if they do. smile.gif

Greetings EnigmaChick

A tip of the hat to a fellow WTT supporter!

Can you please post a dxdiag report of the affected computer?

It's best to do this right after a fresh restart, before you load up any programs.

Click Start, then Run. Type dxdiag and click OK.

Wait for the little progress bar at bottom-left to finish, and then click Save All Information.

Give it a name and location (default is DxDiag.txt on the Desktop).

Then open that file (locate it and double-click on it) and copy and paste its entire contents to a message here.

Don't worry about the size, we know it's big. smile.gif

Speaking of big, Doug got spared again with one of my monster posts I had already to go on this one! But he does keep asking for it.....

Regards

Kaz

Will do so tomorrow, as I said before I'm going to upgrade my card soon because it's not great for game performance.

Here is the dxdiag log, I have edited out one area because I felt uncomfortable with that information being posted, otherwise it is unchanged.

May I also aske that once this post has been reviewed that I edited it or that it is deleted because I feel uncomfortable having so much of my computer information on the Internet?

Greetings Ms. EnigmaChick

Needless to say you are very very very short on system memory by a factor of 4, 1 gb would be so much better. This could contribute to why your graphics are not as they should be.

QUOTE
Memory: 256MB RAM

but with that said........................

Lets play with Hardware acceleration!

Hardware acceleration is a setting for the video card driver which allows it to interact with some of your system's resources to render the screen display. By default, hardware acceleration is set to Full.

Lets see if it is still so.

To access this setting:

Right-click in a blank area of the Desktop.
In Windows XP and 2000, choose Properties > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot.
Slide system hardware acceleration to Full if it is not.
Restart the computer if you had to change it.
Then try the dxdiag and see if you have D3D functionality

If not then here are some other things I see in your report.

QUOTE
AGP Status: Not Available

This is the first one that seems not right to me. Your card is a AGP card.

Please enable this, run dxdiag, go to the Display tab and press enable next to AGP texture acceleration.
If this cant be done, it may indicate a bigger system issue like not all of the chipset drivers are properly installed.
Because AGP is part of those. Not sure yet if I want to tackle those with you yet.

QUOTE
Display Tab 1: No problems found. Direct3D functionality not available. You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer.

This one defininetly pointing at the video card and/or its drivers.

QUOTE
Card name: RADEON 9250 Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc. Chip type: RADEON 9250 AGP (0x5960)

Thats your card

QUOTE
Driver Version: 6.14.0010.6599 (English)

There is your Driver., but If I have read it right you should be using 6.11 version vs the 6.14 version. This link from ATI --->Radeon 9200 driver.

So try that driver.

Those would be what steps I would take to try to get this to do the D3D and other DirectX functionality active.

Since you said you are getting another card chasing this down might be fun but might not be necessary.

This is the link to the latest directX ----->Latest DirectX

Regards

Kaz.

I'm currently downloading the driver and suite given in the link but with my speed reduced to almost cable cos I went over my monthly download limit it should take ages! happy.gif Thanks very much for giving it to me because I had scoured the ATI site awhile ago looking for the latest driver that worked for my system but couldn't find it. For a little while I was having issues with installing new drivers, my system would freeze and I ended needing to uninstall the driver and reinstall the one that came with the disk(2003 driver) but recently that's cleared up so installing drivers makes me a little nervous but I think now it should be ok.

I'll look into the other things, the AGP thing is very weird, I had issues when I changed monitors last month but got that fixed.

I'm planning on upgrading my RAM when I get the new graphics card and a new power supply.

How did you know I was single? laugh.gif

Greetings Ms. EnigmaChick

You must mean the salutation of Ms.? Not wanting to show my age, but there was a time that Women were sensitive to being called MISS. That too was a reaction to age and possible discrimination based on marital status. Was a time in which MRS carried somewhat more social respect. So in all political correctness the MS. came into vogue. It was mean to cover the wide spectrum of the possible marriage status and age.

Miss Smith has three children, Mrs. Smith has three children, Ms. Smith has three children. Miss Smith is 40 years old, Mrs. Smith is 40 years old, Ms. Smith is 40 years old.

As you can see there could be lots of inferences depending on what title you might use.

Besides unmarried Geek girls/women just do not exisit! They are a urban legend!

I exist, it's just a question of whether my mind does! laugh.gif

Hardware acceleration is on full, grayed out option for the AGP texture and installing the ATI package you linked to hasn't changed any of that.
I might already have the latest version of Direct X but if not I'll wait until next month when the download wont be so slow.

I'm thinking you're on the right track with this AGP issue but I've no idea what to do about it.

There's one thing I thought I'd mention, a few months back when the driver issues were freezing my computer I got desperate and reinstalled a bunch of drivers from the original disk that came with the computer and one of them was for the built in graphics card, yet I didn't think to mention it because the computer is recognizing and using the ATI card. Apparently now hardware acceleration or something like that isn't available for my sound card after that as well despite updates to its driver however that hasn't seemed to make a difference in general.

How about aquiring your make and model of motherboard and going to the manufactures website and downloading the chipset drivers? GBT AWDACPI doesnt give us much to work with as a Make and Model.

Is it possible it is a
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Board?

You will need the model and revision number if it is. Usually located on the upper left hand corner of the board next to the last card slot. I suspect it is a VIA chipset seeing you have a AMD cpu in this computer.

This is one of the steps to do AFTER you download and install DirectX again. No sense in jumping to this if that fixes the problem.

Some help in identifying a Motherboard---->ldentify a motherboard<--------

I'm just wondering whether a reformat and reinstall would possibly clear it up, I was considering this before getting my new gear anyway?

Greetings Ms. EnigmaChick

Sure, but this assumes that it did work at one time and a fresh reload will put you in that place again. Did you ever run a dxdiag and note that you had D3D before or is this new thing you have discovered?

I have suggested several possibilities, adjusting hardware accelerations , a new download of DirectX, chipset drivers (after you identify your board), video drivers. increasing system memory. We have not exhausted all of those possibilites yet, but Its your machine and your are certainly entitled to reload the software.

Would you kindly let me know how that works out.

Best Regards

Kaz.

I was just wondering if that would work if the other ways don't work.
I'm not totally sure but I don't think this was always a problem.

I just installed the latest version of DirectX and amazingly the problem has been solved. woot.gif The options in that area that were previously disabled or now enabled and no longer greyed out and I tested the Direct3D function and it passed all of them tests. It did report my sound card didn't support hardware acceleration but I think that was always the case and it's not a big deal. I was only using the DirectX version that was released just before the latest one I think, so I'm surprised such a small update for it worked. I am very grateful for the time you spent going over my log and helping me solve this frustrating problem! thumbup.gif

I am wondering however if it might also be a good idea to get updates for my chipset anyway, it all depends on how risky this could be in terms of system stability, what do you think?
