Here's an excellent alternative defrag tool for Windows 98, ME, 2K, and XP - Diskeeper Lite

"Diskeeper is far and away the most recommended automatic defragmenter for Windows. Diskeeper Lite is a free manual-only version that will introduce you to this powerful system maintenance tool."

XP uses a stripped down version of this.

DK Lite sits in the background, monitors your system and informs you when it's time to defrag.
It's about a 12mb download, but worth it.

Please note that DK Lite will take over you XP defrag - if you want you XP defrag back - just uninstall DK Lite.

For 98 user who don't want to use DK Lite
(98 defrag is useless)
Replace it with the much faster ME defrag.

http://surecool.net/W95x-MeDefrag.zip <---direct download

When you double click on the Me_defrag_install.bat file the following will occur. The Me Defrag batch file will rename the original defrag.exe utility (W98 version # 4.70.1998) to defrag old and install the Me defrag utility to the C:\Windows folder.(Me version # 4.90.3000)
When the installation has completed & you have tested the utility to your satisfaction you may store or delete the MeDefrag folder & files.

also.........

Here's a great tool to partition, format and install all Widows operating systems, with just one click!
EZ-Reload
It's 'goof proof', any one can use it.
It's not free, $3.99 but well worth it.
TRY EZRELOAD, it's an automated Windows boot disk for windows operating systems.

EZ-Reload

Good Luck, MrC

What a server! My DL started at over 2000 KB/sec ohmy.gif biggrin.gif

Diskeeper Lite is *just* what I have been looking for. I have heard/read that XP's defrag leaves much to be desired. Plus, I'm sure it's high-time I analyzed/defragged my poor HD. Thanks for the info MrCharlie. smile.gif

Absolutely. I used it instead of the XP tool. But now upgraded to the full version which is even better. The automatic version is ideal in office environment to schedule defrags.

Nice Job! I'll test DK Lite later.

And what about O&O Defrag? It is a little bit expensive ($49,95 for a single PC). Does anybody recommend it?

Thanks

I presently use the free version of 0&0 Defrag.
It seems to be more thorough than DK Lite.
It also takes a lot longer to run the Analyis/Defrag routine.

If you are going to "spend money" for a Defrag tool.....

Definitely get the VOPT Defrag.
It is by far the best and has been useful in defragging the annoying "game files" that resist defragging, and it places your Virtual Memory Paging File into one chunk, directly at the beginning of whatever drive you have it on, so that your system has "immediate access" to Swap File when needed.

Best Regards

I have a question if I may. How does one know if one drgrag program is better and more thorough than another? The only way I can see to judge is by the speed of the degrag and whether or not it has sped up the machine.

All I really care for is a manual defrag because I do it every week or so whether it needs it or not, so I don't have a need for the monitoring option or any of that. I found that it uses too much resources to suit me. I am currently using the Auslogics freebie which I find to be very fast (faster I think than DK Lite or DK 9) and I usually notice some improvement in computer function. And, Auslogics is 1.43 MB as opposed to the 12 MB of DK Lite.

That sounds like a good way to compare them.
Sound people have said it's a waste of time defragging XP and it really doesn't speed things up.
Use what ever program works best for you.

Just uncheck this file in msconfig:

C:\Program Files\Executive Software\DiskeeperLite\DkService.exe

Concerning my XP Home SP2, P4 3.2 800MHz fsb, 2X1024 pc3200, 120gb sata hdd PC, I run a Selective Start-Up. Can I use Diskeeper Lite and still run a Selective Start-Up? Will using Diskeeper Lite cause my PC to run slower than it does now?
Thanks

Yes you can use it and no it won't slow down your system, it may not cure a slow system though, MrC
