Hi Loubratt...

I reviewed your PCPitStop scan, as Ztruker has suggested there are some recommended tuning procedures that could take place. However, there is absolutely nothing listed in the PCPitStop results that would identify WHY your computer is performing so poorly. Actually, it looks absolutely great.

Your event logs could be identifying a potential problem that will effect performance. Unfortunately, copy and pasting the event entries doesn't work very well for analysis in my opinion. If you would, please attach the SYSTEM and APPLICATION event logs using the procedure below:

How to capture an event log and upload it to the forum:
  • First, open Event Viewer by clicking Start -> Run -> type eventvwr.msc and press ENTER.
  • In the Event Viewer please right click the requested event log (i.e. Application, system, etc...) and click Save Log File As.
  • Please save the logfile to your desktop and give it a recognizable name.
  • Do this for each log that has been requested.
  • When you are finished saving the necessary logs, close Event Viewer.
  • On your desktop find the saved log files. Hold the CTRL key and click to select each event log.
  • When all event logs are selected, right-click one of them, click Send to -> Compressed Zip Folder.
  • A new .ZIP file will have been created on your desktop. Please attach that file to this forum in your next reply.

Lastly, there is no way to know if you might have a failing hard drive or not. Although it will take some time, you need to perform a full surface scan on your hard drive for bad sectors. To do so, click start -> run -> type cmd and press ENTER. At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r and press ENTER. When prompted to schedule the scan during your next restart, answer Yes. Reboot your computer and be patient while chkdsk checks your hard drive for file system and physical problems. It may take a half hour or longer. Pay attention to any messages about windows replacing bad clusters which is a sure sign you are suffering from hard drive trouble and possible hard drive failure.

The memory you add to the computer should be in pairs for best performance. I don't know if you listed exactly what memory you purchased and how much, but you have DDR2 memory running at 667Mhz, otherwise known as PC5300. For your system you should add an additional 2x512Mb (That is 2 - 512MB DDR2 667Mhz chips). That will pair the chips and offer the best improvement. However, your system has 1GB of RAM, and your current configuration will benefit very little from extra memory unless you are using heavy duty gaming or heavy duty graphic programs. Adding any more than the 2x512MB memory will be fruitless and wasted money. Your system will not show any improvement with RAM over 2GB total.

Please post back with your event logs, and the results of your chkdsk.

I forgot to add that you should test your RAM whenever changing or adding to your memory configuration.

http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Test_Mem...ms_t103823.html

Unless installed incorrectly or using the incorrect type of RAM (not likely, because it wont plug in), the performance issues you mention after adding the memory can only have one possible explanation - Bad memory!

You must always test your RAM before using it. Bad memory can corrupt data, and files, and cause all kinds of system problems. The end result can be a system that is completely hosed and unable to be recovered without a complete reinstall.

Hi Loubratt...

Please finish the chkdsk /r scan as recommended earlier. If you see messages about windows replacing bad clusters, please let us know before continuing with the instructions below.

I do see some issues here to help resolve some problems. However, nothing that smacks me right in the face and says, "Here I am!"

First I want to strongly urge you to uninstall Norton Internet Security. Hands down this is guaranteed to return performance and speed to your computer. If you choose not to, you will never realize the performance your computer should have.

Now, lets do this. Open control panel -> add/remove programs.

Uninstall the following items and do not restart until after the final item is removed, then restart:

  • SupportSoft Assisted Service
  • Dell Support 3.2.1
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
  • Viewpoint Media Player

After restart, download this driver from the Dell website: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/...p;fileid=221847

After downloading the driver, run the file. Use the default path for it to decompress to. Unfortunately it doesn't look like Dell provided an installer for this driver, so we are going to have to experiment and this is the best I can do. Go into control panel -> system -> hardware -> device manager. Expand IDE controllers section, right-click Standard Dual Channel IDE controller (you have two of them, just do one for now), and click Update driver. In the hardware wizard, select "No, not this time," when prompted about finding the update online, then click next. Choose to install from a list or specific location and click Next. Click "Include this location in the search," then click the Browse button. Navigate to and select the folder C:\Dell\Drivers\R164974. Then click Next. If all goes well the driver will install. Otherwise, you might get some other notification about it not being installed. Just let me know. Restart your computer if the driver installs. Now, go back into control panel and device manager and look at the IDE controllers section again. Has the name changed from Standard Dual Channel IDE controller, to something with the Nvidia name in it now?

Now, download and install the Microsoft .NET 1.1 framework from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

After installing, restart if necessary then download and install the .NET framework 1.1 service pack 1 update: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

Now, restart if required and then download and install the following update: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...b0-6cf227f3968f The installation should be successful, please let me know if it is not.

Now, click start -> run -> type cmd and press ENTER. At the command prompt, type: sc stop gusvc and press ENTER. Then type: sc delete gusvc and press ENTER. You should get positive confirmation the service was deleted.

Restart your computer one last time.

Please tell me how your computer is running now and upload new SYSTEM and APPLICATION logs so I can see how we did.

Ok I will try to answer in order

I had already uninstalled Norton and am running the comodo....hate it because it asks me every 3 seconds what I want to do about what is happening and I have no idea what i am saying allow or block to but doing the best i know how.

I did the ide thing...it wanted to download into my documents...i let it go there but also changed the location to the C:dell/drivers also but whenever i do the update for the ide controller....it does not show up in the list to choose it..but if I actually go back to the folder (not using the browse button) it is there, it just will not show up in the available list when I go to choose it from the list.

i uninstalled what you told me all but the micrsosoft .NET framework 1.1 it tells me it can not find the install file so it can not uninstall and i also got an error when trying to install the downloads for these packs that you sent. It downloaded fine but says there is an error when trying to install.

I did not continue with the rest because it looks like you want me to do these things in order so I didnt want to run the delete gusvc thing until I told you about the problem with the others...

I will attempt to do the checkdisk as soon as I can possible get that amount of time to be able to watch it..if I am reading it correctly it is something I need to sit here and watch while it runs and note the messages I get. I really have not had enough time to do that...I dont know if you read on the other post but we i am back and forth to our farm right now in harvest and very tough for me to have that block of time so I am trying to follow along with all of these other things that i can do as i go and I will do that part as soon as I have a chance ..

any ideas on the R164974? it seems to be there It just is invisible when i browse for it.

I also have not run the new event thing because I was unable to finish the things you needed on the rest...would you still like me to do that or wait til we figure out this other thing?

Thanks

Hi Loubratt.. Sorry I didn't get back with you sooner. I saw your reply but could not post a response at the moment and then I forgot about it.

Just forget the Dell driver thing for now. It was a long shot and may not even be necessary. I based my decision from something in your event viewer that is probably insignificant.

As far as .NET framework goes. Its a stubborn bugger when there is problems with it. I have dealt with it many times. But, this little tool should help you out: .NET Cleanup Tool. Download, open it and run the .NET cleanup tool. Select the .NET 1.1 framework from the list and remove it. Reboot your computer and then try my instructions again to reinstall the .NET framework and updates.

If successful you can continue with the rest of my instructions.

Ok... I see a lot of errors about your cd-rom. Are you having trouble reading discs in your cd-rom drive?

I also see an issue with QuickBooks, which is typical. There isn't a computer QuickBooks runs on without some kind of issue. In particular it would cause some delay booting your system. If the software wasn't so darn useful I'd throw it in the trash for being one of the worst products ever designed right there along side of Norton products. Seriously though, QuickBooks, if you have it running will also cause many performance issues on your computer, and there is nothing I can do about that. I deal with it daily on my own office computer.

Can you tell me how your computer is running right now?

The errors you may be seeing from cd rom drive could be related to my office disk which is damaged somehow and i was trying to fix it and i never could recover it...so now i will just put on 07 office.....but anyway...it was getting just a bit better with some of the changes you were having me do but windows did the automatic update a few days ago (ill spare you from my opinion on that stupid %#^$*! updater) and now its almost as slow as when i first contacted you...is there a way to stop that? or should i not? ...I dont have any issues with my cd rom otherwise..i have two..i put in one a year and a half ago cause my other would burn cds but not dvds so i added one that would and have never had any probs with it...i had this weird thing pop up yesterday that I think was just one of those nasty pop up lying things...i dont even remember what site i was on but it was something normal....and it came up and across the top ribbon said windows internet security ...then it said your systems is "still" infected by Trojan IbM.win32.faker.a and virus.win32.faker.a and trojan.psw.bat.cunter ........the weird thing is that it asked me if i wanted to run something which of course i said no to but it wouldnt let me close it....which of course makes me suspicious....so i closed it with task manager...havent seen it again and i ran about 20 programs on this machine for virus, malware, spyware, trojan, worm, gummy bears you name it...before they sent me over here to the tech guys so i think im clean.....thats all I know for now...i wonder if i moved quickbooks to my passport and only ran it from there if it would help?

Well, you can disable automatic updates, but personally this is not something I recommend for most users.

This thread has gotten so long and has carried on for so long that I am not real clear on my train of thought any more.

Can you be more specific as to what is running slow now? Is there something in particular you are doing that is especially slow?

Has there been any improvement with what we did?

A new set of event logs might reveal some new issue as a result of the updates you installed, but I'm not real hopeful on that. You can still upload a new set though and I'll take a look.

At the moment I don't have a lot of time to be digging through this thread and checking your PCPitStop test again, but I will try to come up with some new ideas a bit later.
