I was really hoping DMA was the problem, rats!

I'm stumped at the moment. I've asked for some of the other folks here to take a look and see if they have any ideas. I'll also continue to work on this.

One thing I just remembered happened around the same time was that my cf card reader stopped working...not sure if that is related and I get a virtual memory too low warning all the time (which was why I went to buy the ram). I have attached the log.

Forget this. We already tried having you boot to Safe Mode with Networking and it made little or no improvement. Back to the drawing board. pullhair.gif

Some suggestions from the other folks here:

You have Roxio installed. What version? Have you updated it recently? If you were to uninstall it, do you have the ability to reinstall it or did it come with the computer?

Also see you have Norton (Symantec) AV and possibly Security Suite installed. Norton is a major cause of slow performing systems. This is a good candidate to uninstall and replace with other free, less resource intensive applications, like:

Avira Antivir (free version)
Avast Antivirus (free version)

and ...

ZoneAlarm (free version)

Or ...

Comodo Internet Security Suite (free Antivirus and Firewall)

Edit:
It would still be a good idea to get rid of Norton as soon as possible and go with one of the others I list above. I'll remove the strikethrough from them so it's easier to see them.

What about accumulated junk on your hard drive? Do you run any hard drive cleanup programs, like CCleaner, ATF Cleaner, TFC or the built in Windows XP Disk Cleanup?

Follow directions here, see if there is any improvement: How to clean up your hard drive to increase free space NOW!, Windows Made Easy

Once that's done, try defragging your hard drive. You can use the one that comes with XP or try DeFraggler (the one I use) which is from the same group that owns CCleaner and Recuva (a very good program to recover erased files).

Hi loubratt - I've been scratching my head over this one too so I decided to go back and list what you said was not right, then start thinking out loud.
QUOTE
Getting slower and slower everyday.

About 3 mos ago I got an error message that said something about my video card but I have never seen that warning again.

I bought more memory but when i put it in it REALLY slowed it down...almost like it couldnt process the addition of the memory.

I do know that anything with pictures, graphics or when starting up a program is the worst. It also is extremely slow when getting onto internet loading pages. Any ideas?

one thing I just remembered happened around the same time was that my cf card reader stopped working...

and I get a virtual memory too low warning all the time

You guys checked me for the obvious stuff (virus/malware)and then sent me over here to see what you guys could find.
When there's all sorts of weird problems and all the obvious solutions don't pan out, I start backing up to the beginning. An unstable, weak, or failing PSU can results in odd hardware behavior. At this point, I would want to know with 100% certainty I had good power. The only conclusive way to do that is to swap in a known good supply, or take that one to a shop and have them test it properly under a realistic load.

Any errors in Device Manager? Is your card reader still attached? I would disconnect any unnecessary hardware and see what happens too.

Any other recent hardware changes?

Try another network cable to your router, and another port.

Are you sure the new RAM was the right stuff?

I realize you do not want to uninstall Roxio the Easy Media Creater has a history of causing problems for some folks. You might consider uninstalling for a test - you can reinstall it again later.

I note your system is reporting you only have 958 MB of RAM. That is an odd amount as typically RAM for graphics is stolen in 32MB chunks, but 1024 - 958 is 66, and not 64Mb. That said, 64Mb is not very much for today's high resolution, graphics oriented world. It is very likely you would see significant over-all performance with just about any add-in card over your current on-board solution, not only because the graphics processor will likely have more horsepower, but the card will come with its own on-card RAM tweaked for graphics. This, in turn, allows your computer to free up the 66Mb of system RAM currently dedicated to graphics, in effect, giving you a little RAM boost too.

Reason for edit: I had 1026, instead of 1024 :(

Let's see what PCPitStop tells us about your system since the other information has not been much use.

Please Run the PCPitstop Full Tests, here: PCPitstop Full Tests

You must use Internet Explorer as it needs to install an ActiveX program.

Note: Vista users with UAC must first Right-click IE - Select "Run as Administrator"

If you haven't already registered, Click - Sign up now! (left hand column in User Login)

Register and create a password
Accept the ActiveX component to allow your machine to run the Full Tests
Registering and accepting the ActiveX are both SAFE and FREE.

The Full Tests take less than 5 minutes for most machines.

Once you have your Results, please post the URL (the http:// stuff) back here into this thread for review.

Note: The PCPitstop Full Tests Results is a free service, but is supported by various paid product advertisements for utilities that "could" remedy the OP's problem.

Since this site is a "free-help" forum, we do not recommend or endorse purchase of automated utilities, and will assist you in manually correcting any problems and settings necessary to optimize your machine's performance. Ask your questions here. We'll help you walk through any necessary steps.

=====================================================================

Also, look in Event Viewer and see if any errors are being logged (they will be in RED)

Click Start then Run, type eventvwr.msc and press Enter or click OK

Look in all three categories listed on the left. Double click on any error to look at the details. Use the arrows to move up and down in the events listed. Post the data here. If it's more than a couple, copy the data to notepad and save as a .txt file, then use the Browse and Upload buttons below the message input are to upload the txt file here, then click on the Manage Current Attachments box to paste a link to the upload file so we can look at it.

To copy data to notepad, you first have to copy it to the clipboard. You do this by clicking on the icon of two pages under the up and down arrows on the right side of the window. Then you paste the info into notepad.

holy cow..im just slightly overwhelmed at this moment...sorry it has been big spaces between answereing...we are in harvest now and back and forth to farm and very late nights so I apologize for the gaps. I just tried to read through all of these at once and my brain almost exploded..so I am sitting here now with my trusty starbucks latte in hand and I will start with your latest post and work my way through the other posts. Just wanted to let you know I am here and I will also uninstall Norton (which makes my fear factor kick in) and install one of the ones you posted....whew...lots of trust here. I will get back on later tonight or in the morning and post results. Thank you so much for trying so hard on this issue.

Ok I think I have done everything except uninstall Norton but I want to download the other one first so I will do that tonight also...I wanted to get the URL copied in from PC Pitstop for you though

http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/sec.asp?conid=22845945

I noticed you crossed out the one idea about uninstalling Roxio but then later it said something about it..I couldnt tell which were others ideas and which you were saying to do on that one. I would like to leave that for last if we dont find anything else if that will work. I am in the middle of a couple of projects and I am afraid I would lose stuff and then i might actually cry on my keyboard.

Also, are you saying I should put the RAM back in then? I am pretty sure its the right thing...i looked it up on ....mmm now I cant think of the site but its pretty well known to find out which one to buy. It goes in fine it just was soooo super slow once I put it in the one time so I just took it back out. I have no problem putting it back in now just to check though.

I did not run defrag as I had just done that when I contacted you with no change.

I will do the virus protection switchover tonight...I will not be home tomorrow night so it will be Thursday evening again when I can check back in here, just to let you know.

Looks like there are some things you can do immediately to improve performance some.

Change Internet Receive buffer
Improve memory performance
Clear IE cache
Reduce Browser Cache Overflow
Reduce System Restore Capacity

Click on each link and follow the manual directions. Don't download or buy anything from PCPitStop.

Ask here if you have any questions.
