Still Using Windows 98SE

Cannot access Windows Explorer except when in Safe Mode and I can only use Firefox - not IE
I believe I also inadvertently deleted IE5 but System Information says: IE 5 6.0.2800.1106

I believe my problem started when I tried to fix Flash files for video viewing - could not view flash videos in IE and also couldn't with Firefox.

Clicking on automatic message to download new Adobe flash - said my system didn't support it - went on line and I tried to download a revised flash version that I believe was either with:

openpro \ opband.dll

or with

setup903.zip - unzipped files were
file_id.diz
pc.nfo
setup.exe

I believe I deleted above files.

I also have had problems with Adobe for PDF files - not with Foxit Reader

I deleted cookies and internet files including offline
I ran Spybot S&D
Ran Ad-AwareSE may not be updated version as I get an error when trying to update
and ran NoAdware
those three programs gave many threats and cookies that I deleted

Free AVG antivirus shows no threats.
Also ran AVG's Vcleaner in Safe Mode

Still No access to Explorer or IE.

Try a scanreg /restore. Boot the system and just after the POST (Power On Self Test) hold down either the Ctrl or F8 key. This should give you the Microsoft Boot Menu. Choose "Command Prompt Only". Once you get the C:\> prompt, type in;
scanreg /restore

and pick a date ~prior~ to the problem starting. (You should have a choice of up to five dates.) This will replace your registry and the main windows boot files with backups. If this doesn't work, it indicates your paths have been lost or corrupted. (Usually c:\msdos.sys.)

OK Thanks A Lot

Would you say there is big or small risk I would lose saved files such as .doc and/or emails in Outlook Express?

You could lose any data back to that date, but I think it's only windows / registry that gets changed, not data files.

Thanks
I didn't have to try it.

AVG free edition anti-virus found a trojan - DIPYNXX2.dll and let me "heal" it. I still don't have Internet Explorer but I'll just use Firefox.

OK

I did a registry backup using "WINRESCUE 98" before deleting the items in last scan..

All seems to be OK including Firefox except Internet Exployer - tried to open it - said can't fine iexployer.exe (may be the reason for the new RO item in the scan.

Also videos such as youtube don't play

Later AVG found joifsa.dll and deleted it - rebooted and did new scan below

I tried ie.it but still no IE - says can't find iexplorer.exe

I have both ie5setup.exe and ie6setup.exe in Windows Update setup folder

Should I try them?

I know that there are no more updates for WIN 98 but when I click on Windows Updates in Settings there is no response at all

The Cabs folder in Windows Update folder is empty
