Guys, I was wondering if there was anyone out there that can help me.

I can download files of all types from all over the web, EXCEPT Crossfit.com. This is a free exercise site that provides articles in pdf format and videos in WMV and MOV. The rest of the site works OK, but these downloads. Its been like this for a few weeks, and it driving me nuts! A few hundred kb download as normal, then it stops (or slows to a stop)... Over the same period, I've had no trouble downloading any thing else (youtube vids, google chrome, windows updates, updated adaware, etc.). Hijack this log below.

I've tried:
- running virus scan, ad-ware scan & spybot scan (all with latest updates)
- downloading a new browser (Google Chrome) and trying something other than IE
- turning off things like email
- turning of virus scanner
- turning on all the startups in msconfig (I previously had some turned off)
- system restore back as far as I could

I'm running:
-PC
-Windows XP w/ latest SP
-AVG virus scan
-Wireless home network (don't know much about these)

Any ideas?

Thank you for this wonderful help site!

Scott

I think your answer is in your on post. If all the other sites work, I would think it's the site, Crossfit that's having the issues.
Do they have a help area there?

They have a help forum, but I haven't been able to get any ideas from there. The downloads are a major part of what they do, with a huge audience. No one else seems to have any issues.

I may take my laptop to a hotspot today and see if that might implicate my home wireless network. Then I'm flat out of ideas.

Thanks for the reply though!

I don't have issues with anywhere else. For example, I downloaded a download manager pkg today, but that didn't help either... Still a few hundred kb, then stalls (or appears that the kb/sec goes to nearly nothing...).

Of note, they have some pics (nearly a meg) that download no prob. They are from "www.crossfit.com". The ones that won't work are from http://media.crossfit.com or http://journal.crossfit.com, if that could matter.

Thanks again!

I don't beleive this isn't a malware/spyware/virus issue so I'm moving your topic to our Tech Team area.

I'll be removing the HJT log as well.

Hi sshankle,

Very recently I had the very same problem as you are having. I could not access here on WTT. It was the only link on the net I could not access so you can imagine my angst. After trying everything I knew I got my professional technician to come in here to find the problem.

James came, took over an hour to fix my inability to access WTT.

Finally after clearing my Host File, many phone calls back to his base for assistance getting WTT website up, he called my ISP, they took about 10 minutes to give him instrucitons to add proxy into:
  • Internet Options
  • Connections
  • LAN settings
instantly WTT appeared and loaded as normal. Naturally when James asked why the difference to connect to WTT, TPG (my ISP) could not tell him a thing.

So the above was the answer to my problem. I hope this helps you, I have had no problem since a proxy was added.

Best regards,

Hi sshankle

It appears to me that LDTate's recommendation makes sense in pointing to the Website itself and inquiring with their Webmaster or Help Desk.

Your own machine "might" have unique features that specifically conflict with the Website, but we would not know what they might be, whereas the Website might have had a few other member/users with similar concerns.

When you contact them, provide information similar to what you've presented here.
Machine specifications
Operating System
Browser
AntiVirus
AntiSpyware
Firewall
Other installed software that may be involved in downloading (for instance the download manager you recently tried)

They will probably want to know that your have made certain that your machine is not malware infected, but details are not likely to be of use to them.

It would not be necessary to provide a HJT log to them and they would be highly unlikely to provide assistance for removal of malware anyway.
You have already received review from one of the best and most respected Malware Removal experts around.... LDTate.
If you do eventually have Malware Removal needs, I highly recommend that you return to the Malware Removal Forum here, where LDTate and many of his associates provide top notch assistance.

If you receive possible explanations from the Website, but no direct solution, it may be useful to post back here into this thread with the additional information that you may receive.

In the meantime, update your JAVA Runtime Environment to the most recent version
Link here: http://forums.whatthetech.com/Sun_Java_JRE...sed_t96166.html

Use Control Panel - Add/Remove to uninstall your older version of JAVA before freshly installing the new one.

I just tried accessing the CrossFit website, it works fine for me. A point to note is that when accessing a .wmv file, it loaded WMP within my web browser.

Perhaps there's the possibility of program errors that play your movie files? What CODECS (if any) have you installed?

tallin,
Thanks! I'll look into proxy servers. I'm on comcast, and couldn't find one last night though...

Doug,
Thanks for the pointers. I'll try them again. They have a pay service to access some material. Maybe I can get some help if I explain that this is the hold-up from me sending them some money.

Troy,
I have tried opening it throgh the browser like you did, or "save file as" route. Both bomb. And my player works fine with other files and on other sites.

I don't know how to tell what CODECs I have installed (or what they are), but I'll look that up...

Guys, Any chance this could be comcast? I've seen articles about them slowing downloads from some sites...?

Thanks guys!

Hi again,

If Comcast is the culprit, then I advise to change ISP! I suggest you give their support a call and see if they shed any light on the matter.

You don't go looking for a proxy, contact your ISP, explain the problem as I did to mine, then they will give you the proxy to add to your LAN settings.

As soon as the proxy was added, my problem was solved.
Why, I do not know, nor did my tech, nor could my ISP tell him the reason.

Best regards,

Tallin, I used to have that situation crop up when I was on Dial-up.
An ISP only has a certain number of Modems through which all of their customers must connect.
They usually reserve one or two for their business work and as backup or service testing.
Those one or two may have little or no traffic, therefore a proxy address routed through either of those two low volume traffic modems may be better.
They are unlikely to let their general population know the situation, but may want to act like heroes that can fix a customer problem when they want to.

That was back in dial-up days, but I imagine there is a parallel comparison with DSL.

Thank you Doug for your explanation re your dial-up situation long ago, I also had the very same experience when on dial-up many moons ago. I do understand dial-up and how it works. First on first off in my experience, here in Oz that is how it worked. A bit like a Suchi bar if you have ever gone to one!

In my situation as related in my last post, my problem was certainly corrected/solved instantly when unable to access WTT.

OK guys, Thanks for the help so far!

Today, I took my laptop and logged on through the guest wireless at my office. Here, the downloads went for a few seconds, stalled for 5-20 seconds, then started again and finished OK.

Stupid questions...
1. Does this mean it is not my PC?
2. I am going to see if our business line is comcast related. Any other suggestions for what to look into next?

Thanks again!

Scott
