Hi,

I have a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DQ6 motherboard, an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield, Socket 775 LGA cpu, and Windows XP Pro x64.

I haven't had any problems with my pc until now. I haven't installed any new programs or drivers within the past 4 to 6 weeks.

When I rebooted about an hour ago, my computer started beeping and tried to boot over and over. The beep was the sound that the motherboard beeps when it's posting but the beeps were short, one after the other, non-stop and it never finished booting.

I then opened my computer case and noticed that the cpu fan wasn't spinning. I checked the cpu connection to the motherboard and the power connector to the cpu fan and they were snug, but I unplugged them and replugged them to make sure. The board has a CMOS reset button so I pressed it. I unplugged everything from the wall socket and also from the rear of the case and let it set for about 1/2 hr. After I plugged everything back in and tried to start it again, the beep started again and again it wouldn't boot all the way to Windows.

I checked for malware problems using Avast, SuperAntiSpyware, MBAM and AdAware but only a few cookies were found.

Is it ok for the cpu fan not to be spinning? It might be thermistatically controlled, but I don't know if it is.

I couldn't find anything in the motherboard manual about short beeps, one after the other. Does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was just reading the mobo manual and found that continuous short beeps is a power error. The cpu fan still isn't spinning but there doesn't seem to be a problem with it. I don't know what the power error is. Everything was well connected but I disconnected everything from the psu and reconnected it again but I'm still having the problem booting up.

Hi, Sorry to hear of the problem with the CPU.
Don't try and boot it up again...if the fan on the CPU is not spinning then the CPU will quickly fry itself if it has failed..it will only survive a very short time without the fan spinning....... some will fail within a few seconds of a fan malfunction.

The best bet is to contact the system builder and get them to check things out.......a competent local computer technician is your next best bet.......but you will be kucky to get away wth just a fan.....a new CPU or motherboard is sometimes required in these circumstances.

My computer started up one of the times I booted it. The cpu fan must be turning on and off but I never see it spinning. I don't see any other reason why the cpu hasn't fried. I built the computer myself in March 2008 and I remember the cpu fan spinning at that time. I haven't had any reason to check the cpu fan again until today and I was really surprised to see it not spinning and my computer has been turned on for hours. I watched it for about 10 minutes and it never started spinning.  ???  I doubt if the case fans are keeping the cpu cool but it's strange that it's not frying the cpu with the fan not spinning. This has me baffled. Anybody have any ideas what's going on?

Hi, If your computer works OK and you can access Windows and all your files without the CPU fan spinning then you are very lucky.... incredibly lucky!
The best advice is to replace it ( the fan) immediately and don't turn on the machine even for one second until you have replaced it.

Hi Paws . . . Thanks for your advice. I have a 3-year manufacturer's warranty on the cpu which came with the heatsink and fan. I'll contact the manufacturer about an RMA.
