It's important to keep a good copy of the registry and know how to restore it when needed.
Registry Backup and Restore for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP/Vista "ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed." Here's how to backup and optimize the registry using ERUNT: You can find information on ERUNT and NTREGOPT HERE, please read through it. (WIN98 and ME users....the registry is automatically backed up...no need to install ERUNT) Please download and install ERUNT using This Link. Alternate Download During the installation process you'll be asked if you want to put erunt.exe in your Startup Folder........click NO, there's no need to backup the registry every time you start Windows.....just create a new backup when ever you make any changes to your computer. After installation is complete you should see two new icons on your desktop, ERUNT and NTREGOPT. Double click on ERUNT to backup the registry. The registry backup will be stored in C:\Windows\ERUNT. To restore the registry open up the folder containing the backup and double click on erdnt.exe (WIN98 and ME users.....check HERE on how to restore a copy of the registry) HERE'S a good tutorial on the registry and using ERUNT, I also suggest you Print this out and save it for future use if needed. <====><====><====><====><====><====><====><====><====><====><====><====> What does Optimize the Registry mean? NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster. Check HERE for more info Here's how to optimize the registry: To optimize the registry just double click on the desktop icon NTREGOPT. (WIN98 and ME users....this is not necessary as it's done every time you start Windows) Good Luck, MrC |
