The problem is that over the last month, my mother's computer has slowly been deteriorating, with various graphical malfunctions and minor input problems. She uses Second Life, and I think she may have had a script attached to her account (although I don't know). However today, her computer froze and after she resetted, refused to turn on. It makes three beeps then nothing; the computer's on but no-body's home. When my brother comes home (the oldest and tech capable) he explains for the last week or so sometimes his computer refuses to start, too.

Yesterday my computer also froze and I had to reset - something that's happened twice today, and I also had a mouse input problem at one point. Also the previous night, a webpage for a real estate firm randomly opened itself. Now tonight, my brother's computer also refuses to turn on with the same thing my mum's has. We're all connected on a network, so whatever it is may have spread. I do however have the highest security installed as a similar scenario happened to my computer months earlier (and I had to get a new one - something I can't this time around). We're all concerned as to what's happening, and I am mainly concerned as I'll need the computer when I start University too. Any advice is welcomed, although I worry that I may not be able to respond as my own computer may go due to this software/hacker/other. Thanks for the help! smile.gif

Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech smile.gif

Apologies in the delay in a response. We are overwhelmed with logs at the moment and there aren't enough helpers to go around. If you still require help, please do the following:

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done two logs should open:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
---------------------------------------------------
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.

Please describe how your computer is behaving at the moment, listing any symptoms and problems that you are experiencing.

Thanks.

Thank you for the reply! As for the problems, my computer froze on occassion after my brother's and mother's died, and sometimes keys I'd type wouldn't go in. This however has calmed down a bit. My mother experienced freezing, lack of mouse input, when on Second Life the graphics would appear heavily skewed and bright, mishappen objects would be there (this is indeed graphical as her Avatar and the worldspace was also affected, but only to her). My brother experienced difficulty turning the computer on and occasional freezing before it too died - my brother's was acting up only a week before death, whilst my mother's a month, slowly deteriorating. She foolishly had no active firewall, only the Windows one that she put on about ten days before it died.

It's important I fix this, as I need to type things for my Uni course on the computer and cannot afford another. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

If you haven't done so in the last few days, please open MalwareBytes' AntiMalware, update it, and run a Full Scan. If it finds anything, please post the log it generates.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    CODE
    :file
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\Lbd.sys

    :service
    Lbd
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found at on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked ... leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Thanks.
