Hi there
Today Avast is asking me to choose a skin after having used it for months without this request appearing...I choose one of two skins offered but it won't accept it and I have to close out of it. I don't particularly care to apply a skin at all...I have not seen this message before but it has randomly popped up 3 times today. I have recently had a virus removed from my system using Combofix and Avast needed to be closed down and re-started...could this be how the problem originated?
Cheers
Belinda

Yes it is highly possible that Avast has been corrupted due to this, the first job of an infection is to cripple your protection, thus allowing deeper and more varied infection to propagate, I have not come across this issue before, and don't know if it's a known issue, but the simplest thing to try is a reinstall of Avast, how problematic this may be we will have to see as we try.
So lets try the least disruptive method first, I have not tried this so am unsure what it will do, but download the latest copy, then install it, my hope is this will pick up the existing install and ask you what you want to do, if it does my hope is your will be able to select a repair install, this is what I suggest as a first try assuming it allows.

Now if it does not allow this option, then try and install it over the top of the existing, not ideal, but if it works it's simpler than starting from scratch.
Worst case uninstall Avast, I suggest using Revo Uninstaller for this, after the uninstaller has run, Revo then allows you to move onto subsequent screens that list remnants of this left behind, click on select all, then delete, move onto the next screen then repeat as needed, this will hopefully remove ALL files and therefore not remember problems on a fresh install.
Revo sometimes doesn't report any leftover files, thats fine just close it, other times it may find 1 or 2 pages (possibly more in extreme cases) of files left behind, just take each page as it comes, when it's finished just close it as I said previous, then reboot the system then install the fresh copy of Avast, hopefully something within all this will get a result.
