I am new to this Forum so here goes.

I hope I am doing this right!

I was attempting to upgrade to Windows 7 when I noticed a program running my Hard Drive.

Looking at the Task Manager I found Alert Popup running. I killed it and ran a scan using Superantivirus as suggested by the McAfee web site by user Ex_Brit.

That didn't remove the problem so I went to the next step which was to run Hijack and send the log file to a suggested Forum. I chose this one as had read several things on it before that helped me out.

I am running McAfee as my antivirus
OS is Vista
Computer is Qosmio X305-Q705

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

• I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
• The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
• Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

Download TFC to your desktop

• Close any open windows.
• Double click the TFC icon to run the program
• TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
• Click the Start button to begin the process.
• Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
• The program should not take long to finish it's job
• Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
• if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
• Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I ran TFC following all your instructions which worked perfectly.
Everything worked as you said it would.

Then I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware following your instructions again.
Everything there worked perfectly as well.
All items found during the scan were removed and the machine was rebooted.
No message about files that couldn't be removed.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

• Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
• It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
• When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
• Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
  Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
  Archives
  Mail databases
• Click on My Computer under Scan.
• Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
• You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
• Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
• Please post this log in your next reply.

I did as you requested and the scan returns with nothing found. A blank report.
With everything that I have been doing I really don't know what new programs I have that are running in the background.

I have McAfee as my virus scanner and I ran those other programs you asked me to run.

I think Malwarebytes is starting every time I start my computer now as well as that AlertPopup that I am trying to get rid of.

So what do we do next?

• Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  
  
• As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  
  
• Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.





Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:




Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.


Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

I am running the 64 bit version of Vista and Combofix says it will only run on XP.

Oops. My mistake. I forgot you were running a 64 bit version. Let's do this:

• Download OTL to your desktop.
• Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
• Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
• Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
    Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.

Well I seem to have another problem.
OTL will not run, the message OTL is not a valid Win32 application error window comes up when I try to run it from the desktop.

Just FYI I have ran several scans with other anti spyware/malware programs with mixed results.
It seems every program finds different "issues".

I'm still hanging in there though so what is next?

I have considered just reformatting the computer using the recovery disk that came with the computer and starting all over again.
Then maybe the upgrade to Windows 7 would be less painless.

Let's try a different scanner. This program has been updated to work with x64 systems so let's give it a try.

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

• DDS.scr
• DDS.pif
• Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
• Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
• When done, DDS.txt will open.
• After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
• Save both reports to your desktop.

• Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
• Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.

I had that program already but I downloaded it again and ran it.
The program recommended zipping the files so that is what I did.
Both files are in the zip folder.

1. Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
2. From the drop-down menu, choose English or the appropriate language...and click on Select.
3. JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
4. Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
5. A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
6. Copy and paste the contents of the JavaRa log, in your next reply.

Your Java is out of date.

Java™ 6 can be updated from the Java Control Panel. Go Start > Control Panel(Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts.

Other than that, the only thing I see is that your system is complaining that SuperAntiSypware is incompatible with your system. Are you getting any warnings? When you installed it, did you make sure it was x64 compatible?
