Well normally I can figure things out on my own but this ones got me stumped. I don't know what caused it but for some reason I can not install AVG 8, I get all the way to the point in the setup where it's installing but it hits this error every time.



I had AVG 7 and it is uninstalled now but I can't remember if I tried to install 8 while 7 was still on, that may of messed it up, although 7 is definitely off now. I also did a search for the old version, AVG 7, to see if I could get that back on to have at least something, I found an old update and it installed but the update manager was corrupted so I was stuck with one of the very very early versions of 7 and the constant out of date pop-ups were annoying.

So if anyone has any help they can offer on fixing this so that 8 will install I'd be really grateful.

Sorry to see your problems with AVG....

Does either or both AVG 7.5 or AVG 8.0 show in your Add and Remove? If they do, I suggest you attempt to uninstall them both. If you really want AVG 8.0 download it to your desktop prior to uninstalling from Add and Remove so it is there to install offline making sure you do not get a virus while unprotected.

What is showing in My Computer > C\:Drive > Program Files > Grisoft? If after uninstalling both as suggested above through Add and Remove.....let us know please.

However if software gives me trouble I do not bother with it as there is so much out there to choose from. Would you consider Avast Free Antivirus Home edition. I changed from AVG Antivirus to Avast when I had troubles similar to you and have not looked back since. I recommend Avast as I have it on both my computers.

No, neither AVG showed up in add/remove programs. I went to the Grisoft/AVG folder and found one file, it was some kind of backup file, I would give you more info but after posting this I decided to check program files and I already deleted the Grisoft folder. I also looked through my registry and found a folder for Grisoft > AVG but they were both empty so I deleted them. I tried to re-install after deleting those but same problem.

I may eventually decide to switch to a different anti-virus but I usually like to stick with the things I've used for a while and I've been with AVG from 5 so I'm really used to it. I would like to exhaust all other efforts to get 8.0 to work before switching to Avast, I am however very close to this point.

Okay I understand, you are keen on AVG...How long is it since you rebooted your machine?

I suggest you download and run ATF-Cleaner exe, run it making sure you have all your passwords on hand as you will need them to log into your particular links. Reboot and then try to install AVG again.

Is there any evidence showing of AVG anywhere on your system if you put in a search for it?

May I recommend Avira?
It has a very good detection rate, is not bloated, and updates daily.
The only issue is that when it updates you get a nag screen. This can just be Xed out and forgotten.

This computer is rebooted on a daily basis, its turned off at night and on sometime in the morning. It usually gets several boots a day. Also I already have ATF-Cleaner and use it normally however I will try clearing my caches right before installing AVG. The search turned up an AVG 7 Folder under Application Data for all users, but all it has are some .cfgs, still I'll delete them, clear the cache and try again.

Well it worked! Almost... After deleting the AVG 7 folder, clearing my cache, and running the AVG 8 setup it installed, however I was suspicious because the program is supposed to come up and update right after installation, it has done that on all the other computers I installed it on. I was correct as after rebooting, AVG 8 has an error when I try to run it with the installed shortcut:

C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG 8\avgui.exe" has failed to start because the application is incorrectly configured. Reinstalling the application may fix this.

So I guess I'll first try a re-install with the .exe, then a complete uninstall and then install. Anyways out of one problem and into the next >=(

You have more patience with software malfunctioning than I have as stated before in an earlier post of mine. Sometimes certain software programs will just not run on systems configured in certain ways. This is why I do not bother with them if they fail to behave in a timely manner.

You could try Revo uninstaller as a last resort to rid your system of all AVG before trying to install once again AVG 8.0.

Usually I have a short temperament but when it comes to computers, I almost never give up. Unfortunately I think I will be doing so know. I haven't tried Revo but I'm certain the problems no longer the installation but something with my computer. Since it does successfully install but it simply has an error with the application configuration. It could still be from the installation but I think it's my computer messing with something in it.

So it looks like I'll be getting a new Free Anti-Virus software.

tallin, since you suggested Avast first I may go with that but do you think Avira may be a better choice?

I don't think you will regret installing Avast. I can only speak and recommend it as I have no experience with Avira whatsoever.
